Roland Habersetzer (born in May 28th, 1942) is a French martial arts scholar, who specializes in Japanese martial arts|Japanese and Chinese martial arts. He was a teacher and taught history and geography for 37 years in a French high school before his retirement. Habersetzer is expert in several martial styles and is he author of numerous reference books on martial arts.
Habersetzer is one of France's and Continental Europe's premier authority in Asian Martial Arts.[1][2][3] He is the husband of Gabrielle Habersetzer, with whom he co-signed certain works.Habersetzer G & R, 2004, foreword</ref>
Life
Habersetzer has been practising martial arts since 1957, when he began to practice judo and jujutsu. In the following year, he became aware of karate, which had only recently found its way to France and was only practiced there in small groups.
He eventually made the decision to pursue Karate. In 1961 he received the 1st Dan in this martial art, making him one of the first "black belts" in France and the youngest at that time.
In 1962 he founded the Karate / Kobudo group of the Strasbourg University Club, and was its director and advisor until 1990.
In 1963, Roland Habersetzer lived in Basel with his parents and taught history, geography and karate at the University of Strasbourg. Following a request from the president of the Mulhouse judo club, he started between two Basel-Strasbourg trains, on a voluntary basis, the first public weekly karate training course; Wednesday October 9, 1963 at the Dojo of the corporate JCC in Mulhouse-Bourtzwiller. Thus, he contributed to the opening of Karate in the Haut-Rhin and in the Eastern region with the agreement of Mr. Kiener, president of the league.
This martial art was nationally constrained by judo clubs, who in turn refused Habersetzer's students, claiming their students damaging the tatami mats in a way that would make them unavailable for the judo practitioners. As, at that time, there was a lack of space to practice, which lead to difficulties in the popularization of karate on the national level. As a result, the advance in the east has not yet been caught up by other regions.
Roland Habersetzer began in 1968 producing popular works (including an Encyclopedia of Far Eastern Martial Arts) and publications in trade journals (Ronin, Budo magazine, etc.).
State graduate in 1972 and 5th dan in 1978, he worked for 10 years in the Fédération Française de Karaté of the Eastern France region.
Disappointed by the tendency of karate to develop from a martial art to a sport, he founded the Center de Recherche Budo (CRB) in 1974, an international organization whose aim is to establish friendly relations between all budōka who are primarily concerned with the preservation of the spiritual values of the Japanese and Chinese martial arts.
His first novel, Li, le Mandchou, was published by Trévise in 1976; He subsequently published three further novels with martial arts-related plot in the renowned French publisher Pygmalion, as well as a volume with stories based on historical sources about the warrior caste in medieval Japan.
For over 30 years he has been advocating the continued existence of traditional karatedô. The spirit and technique of his conception of Budō are reflected in his numerous technical and historical works (more than 70 books so far), which are highly regarded in the world of martial arts. He leads courses all over the world. Since 1975 he introduced the karatedô in the countries of Eastern Europe.[4]
He was named 8th Dan of Karatedo, Japan, in 1992, by O-Sensei Tsuneyoshi Ogura at the Gembukan Dojo, with the title of Shihan, Grandmaster of his school (Ogura Sensei was notably a student of Gogen Yamaguchi, 1909-1989 , and Gima Makoto, 1897–1998).
In 1995 Habersetzer created the Tengu-Ryū or Tengu-no-michi, (literally: "Way of Tengu"), a purely defensive practice of the martial arts within the framework of the CRB. Tengu-no-michi means the adaptation of the classical Japanese martial arts (Sogo Budō) to the needs and possibilities of modern times (Shin Budō).[5][6]
In 2000, he and his wife, Gabrielle Habersetzer, were awarded the Prix de technique et de pédagogie sportives by the Minister of Sports (France) Ministry of Sports.
In 2006, he was named 9th dan in karate in Japan, he is one of the highest ranking outside this country.
