Robin James Maynard MBE was born six days after D-Day on June 12, 1944. He is a retired philanthropic[1] insurance broker and businessman who was dispatched to Japan in 1978 by his employer, Sedgwick Group, a European insurance and reinsurance broker. 5 years after retirement in Japan in 2010, he founded The William Adams Club in Tokyo.[2][3]
Early Life and Education
Attended the now closed[4] Eton House School at Southend-on-Sea. Completed the Chartered Insurance Institute professional examinations.
Career
1963 - 1978
Initially an underwriting trainee at the Provincial Insurance Company. Switched to insurance broking and by 1978 was an Associate Director of Sedgwick UK. Dispatched to Japan in that year.
1978 - 1990
Became the Sedgwick Group Liaison Representative. In 1982 established the Japan Branch of Sedgwick Far East as General Manager, being the first European insurance broker to provide local professional insurance and risk management services for indigenous industry and commerce. By 1990 positioned as Joint Managing Director of Sedgwick Asia Pacific based in Japan.
1990 - 2010
In 1990 joined Cornes Group (aka. Cornes & Co., Ltd.), a moderate sized conglomerate established in Japan in 1861 and the oldest continuing foreign company in the country.Appointed as Lloyd's Agents in 1868.[5]
Revamped insurance operations as General Manager, and then appointed to the Group main board, in charge of all insurance operations and all the non-trading type of businesses within the conglomerate, based in Japan. Ranked as a Senior Managing Director at the time of retirement in 2010.
Became a Lloyd's "name" for the 1987 underwriting year until 2007. From 1999 to 2007 was the Lloyd's General Representative in Japan with full powers of attorney. Resigned in 2007 before retiring in 2010.
Honours, Commendations & Awards
- 2010 - Lifetime honorary member of the British Chamber of Commerce in Japan. [6]
- 2013 - MBE - for services to the British community in Japan. [7]
- 2021 - The Japan-British Society award - for contribution in the field of Japanese-British relations over many years. [8]
- 2022 - Hirado City recognition and certification - for instigating and funding the excavation and identification of the remains of William Adams[9][10], in time for the 400th anniversary of his death at Hirado on 16th May 2020.
- 2023 - The Japanese Foreign Ministers Commendation - for the promotion of mutual understanding between Japan and the UK. [11]
- 2024 - The Order of the Rising Sun (Kyokujitsu-shō) - Gold & Silver Rays - for long standing contribution to developing cultural exchange and friendship between Japan and the UK, including efforts as President of The William Adams Club.[12]
