Roberto V. Zicari is an Italian computer scientist and professor, known for his contributions to database systems, artificial intelligence (AI), and the assessment of trustworthy AI. He is the founder and scientific lead of the Z-Inspection® initiative, which provides a methodology to assess the trustworthiness of AI systems in practical use.
Academic Background and Career
Zicari was born in Milan, Italy. He holds a Doctor of Engineering degree from the Politecnico di Milano. From 1992 to March 2021, he served as a full professor of database and information systems at Goethe University Frankfurt in Germany.
He is currently an affiliated professor at Yrkeshögskolan Arcada in Helsinki, Finland, and an adjunct professor at Seoul National University, South Korea. He is also a Visiting Fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute (EUI).
Earlier in his career, Zicari was an associate professor at the Politecnico di Milano. He held research positions as a visiting scientist at the IBM Almaden Research Center in the United States and at the University of California, Berkeley. He also held visiting professorships at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), the National University of Mexico, and the Copenhagen Business School.
Z-Inspection® and Trustworthy AI
Zicari leads the international Z-Inspection® initiative, which defines a framework for assessing the ethical and technical trustworthiness of AI systems based on the European Commission's guidelines. The methodology has been applied in real-world projects, especially in the healthcare domain.
One notable study, "Assessing Trustworthy AI in Times of COVID-19," published in the IEEE Transactions on Technology and Society, evaluated an AI system designed to assess lung compromise in COVID-19 patients using the Z-Inspection® process.[1]
Zicari is also involved with the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité, where he contributes to the Trustworthy AI in Healthcare Lab.[2]
In April 2022, he gave a guest lecture on Trustworthy AI and the EU AI Act at the Seoul National University Law School.[3]
Publications and Editorial Work
Zicari is the editor of ODBMS.org, a portal focused on big data and new data management technologies.[4] He also maintains the ODBMS Industry Watch blog, featuring expert insights and interviews in the data and AI sectors.[5]
He is the author or co-author of several books, including:
- XML Data Management (Addison-Wesley, 2003)
- Succeeding with Object Databases (John Wiley & Sons, 2000)[6]
- Advanced Database Systems (Morgan Kaufmann, 1997)
- Conceptual Modeling, Databases, and CASE (John Wiley & Sons, 1992)
He has also contributed to industry and academic platforms, including a chapter in the Routledge FreeBook *Explorations in AI and Machine Learning*.[7]
Recognition
Zicari represented the Object Management Group (OMG) in Europe for over 15 years. His research has been cited in academic and policy circles, and his work on trustworthy AI has been featured in collaborations with universities, research institutes, and EU-funded projects.
