Roberto Ferrante (Naples, 28 March 1965) is an Italian record producer.

He founded the music label Planet Records,[1] since 1997 active in international pop/dance music, and since 2003 in Latin American music[2] first in Europe and then worldwide, promoting the most important Latin music genres such as Bachata, Salsa, Reggaeton, Dembow, Cubaton, Merengue Urbano.

Biography

Ferrante studied drums and piano at the Naples Conservatory. In 1983 he signed his first contract with Claudio Casalini's music label, “Best Records”, to release his first record as an artistic producer: Pineapples "Come On Closer"[3][4] (a hit played in underground Chicago clubs by deejays like Mickey Oliver).[5][6]

From 1984 to 2014, Ferrante[7] produced more than one hundred and seventy records (including albums and singles),[8] collaborating with Italian and international record companies, reaching the highest positions on the worldwide sales charts and gaining weeks of presence on the Billboard charts.

Roberto Ferrante also contributed to the creation of the musical identity of several historical hits by Articolo 31, 99 Posse, Prozac+, Adriano Celentano, Gerardina Trovato, Ambra Angiolini and Paolo Belli. He has created more than a hundred international dance tracks and reached the top of the European, Japanese and American charts (he has been in the Billboard top 50 four times, and once in first position with Omega, the leading exponent of Urban Merengue). He has created TV themes for many television shows for both RAI and Mediaset, including “Scherzi a parte”, “La sai l'ultima?”, Giorgio Panariello's “Torno sabato”, and “Ballando con le stelle”.[9]

At the end of 1998 he founded Planet Records, an independent label that aims to launch new talents and renew the musical offerings of affirmed artists. With his new label Planet Records he produced Prozac+ Acida remix (2nd Fimi-Nielsen Single),[10] Lisa (2nd best new proposals and 3rd big in Sanremo 1998, top 20 selling albums), Angels of Love (1st in the UK House chart in 1998 and in 2000), Kay Bianco (top 20 Music Control), Miele (Top 20 Fimi-Nielsen single), and the return of italian pop star Paolo Belli.[11]

In summer 2003, Roberto Ferrante launched Obsesión by Aventura (one of the best-selling records in Europe and Platinum in Italy).[10] Aventura performed in the 2004 Sanremo Festival as international super-hosts.

With Planet Records, in 2004 he launched the magazine Latino! (a magazine with compilation CDs), which sold more than one and a half million copies between 2004 and 2014.[12]

From 2004 to the present, Roberto Ferrante has been active in launching the trend of 'Latin music', the original one, produced in native countries such as Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, with a huge commercial success,[13] promoting with Planet Records artists such as Aventura, Omega, El Cata, Gente De Zona, Papi Sánchez, Los 4, Los Van Van, Charanga Habanera, and collaborating on the international success of Latin music superstars such as Prince Royce, Luis Enrique, Pitbull and Osmani Garcia.

In 2008, Ferrante opened a Planet Records' office in Miami[14] and then, in 2010, one in the Dominican Republic. Since 2009, Planet Records has operated a worldwide record distribution network, reaching the United States and all major European countries with physical CDs, and worldwide with digital products.[15]

In 2009, Planet Records was nominated for Latin Grammy Awards.[16] Between 2009 and 2023, it reached the first position on Billboard's US sales chart countless times. Planet Records has surpassed three hundred weeks on the Billboard charts and hundreds of weeks on the European sales charts.[17]

Roberto Ferrante lives between Havana, Miami, Naples and the Caribbean.
