Robert Lemay (born February 13, 1960) is a Canadian composer of solo, chamber and orchestral works.[1] Noted especially for his contribution to the saxophone repertoire, Lemay's music is distinguished by the imaginative use of the concert space and extended technique|extended instrumental techniques. Among his inspirations are his collaborations with eminent performers, the art of filmmakers and painters, and deeply expressive responses to the tragedy of war and human suffering.

Early years and education

Lemay, who was born in Montreal but grew up in Bois-des-Filion, Quebec, began composing while a member of a local progressive rock band. Following studies at Université Laval|Laval University, where he received his Master's degree (M.Mus.) under François Morel, he completed a doctorate (D.Mus.) at the Université de Montréal under Michel Longtin in 1994. A formative influence was the year he spent at the University at Buffalo|State University of New York at Buffalo, where he studied with David Felder and participated in seminars given by Brian Ferneyhough, Louis Andriessen, and Donald Erb. He also met his wife, the pianist Yoko Hirota.[2] In France, he worked with François Rossé in Bordeaux and Georges Aperghis at the Atelier Théâtre et Musique in Paris.

Career

Lemay's oeuvre is particularly noteworthy with respect to the saxophone, for which he has written over 80 pieces ranging from solos to large ensembles. He has worked closely with many of the instrument's leading artists and ensembles including Jean-François Guay, Jean-Michel Goury, and Jean-Marie Londeix.[3]

Since 2000, Lemay has resided in Greater Sudbury, Ontario[4] where he taught as a sessional member of the music department at Laurentian University from 2000-21. He also taught at the University of Saskatchewan in 1996-97.

From 2004-18, Lemay was President and Artistic Director of the 5-Penny New Music Concerts in Sudbury. A number of his works, as well as those other contemporary Canadian composers, such as James Rolfe and Brian Harman, were premiered. The series also presented programs on composers of the past century including Toru Takemitsu, Witold Lutosławski, Luciano Berio, György Kurtag, and Elliott Carter.[5]

Among the performers were Jean-Michel Goury, electric guitarist Tim Brady, bass-baritone Michel Ducharme,[6] guitarist Arturo Parra, and conductor Brian Current, as well as the ensembles Proxima Centauri, Erosonic,[7] Estria, Anubis Quartet, and the Molinari String Quartet.[8] Local artists also contributed, notably Hirota[9][10] and the Silver Birch String Quartet. The ensemble, which recorded Lemay's two string quartets and (with Hirota) piano quintet in the 2013 album, L'errance..., was associated with the composer during much of its twelve-year existence, including a residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity|Banff Centre for Arts in 2011.[11][12][13] Lemay also wrote several solo violin pieces that were premiered by the ensemble's first violinist, Christian Robinson.[14]

Lemay was Composer-in-Residence of the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra from 2008-10. Et une porte d'ombre se referme, for violin and orchestra, was written and performed during this period. Oiseau de givre, for piano and orchestra, was also premiered by the Symphony in 2006.

The production studio for Fragments noirs, for two saxophones, was 2,000 metres underground in Sudbury's SNOLAB research facility. Recorded in 2017, the piece was interspersed with texts by the poet and novelist, Thierry Dimanche, that explored the "underground" culture of Sudbury's mining history.[15][16]

Lemay has been a featured guest composer at academic institutions, conferences, and music festivals throughout North America, Europe, and the Pacific Rim. His music has been performed and broadcast internationally and recognized by the Canada Council for the Arts, SOCAN Foundation, Ontario Arts Council, and Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. His publishers include Éditions Doberman-Yppan (Canada), Éditions Billaudot (France), Éditions Jobert (France), Note en Bulle Éditions (France), and Resolute Music Publications (US). Recorded works are on the Centrediscs, Erol Records, and Atma Classique labels, among others (see Albums and audio files).

Compositional style

Lemay, in a 2008 interview for a thesis on his saxophone works, discussed his evolution as a Atonality|post-atonal composer who was influenced by the spectral music|spectral techniques of Tristan Murail and Gérard Grisey, the Modes (music)|modes of Iannis Xenakis, and the metric modulation|rhythmic modulation of Elliott Carter. He also discussed his distinctive process for the creation of melody.[17]

A stylistic hallmark is the concern with the concert setting including stage layout, spatialization, gesture, and comportment and presence of the performer, which was the subject of Lemay's doctoral thesis and other writings.[18][19]

Another device is the employment of extended techniques that augment the instrument's compass and require considerable virtuosity to perform. The approach has been analyzed in-depth with respect to two of his solo pieces, Ariana, Kaboul (alto saxophone) and Clap (clarinet).[20][21]

Visual arts have been an important influence with two series of musical homages to filmmakers such as Orson Welles and Bernard Émond and painters including Barnett Newman and Eli Bornstein.

The social, political and humanitarian dimension of Lemay's art may be heard in pieces like the award-winning Ramallah, a powerful meditation on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict conflict, and Shadows of Bamiyan, composed in the wake of the Taliban destruction of Buddhas of Bamiyan colossal Buddhas in Afghanistan in 2001.

Lemay has also written pieces for students including 6 Ushebtis (piano), Beat the Drum (alto saxophone), and Train miniature (clarinet).
