Early life and education

Bradley is the son of Robert Bradley Jr. and Patricia (née Pray) Bradley. He was born in Philadelphia in 1944. He attended Chestnut Hill Academy from 1948 to 1960 before transferring to Deerfield Academy and graduating in 1962. Bradley received a Bachelor of Arts in History from Williams College in 1966. After military service, he attended The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, where he earned a Master of Arts in International Relations in 1971.

Military service

After graduating from Williams College, Bradley attended the U.S. Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. He was commissioned as an Ensign in December 1966 and served as Damage Control Assistant on the USS Savage (DER-386) during deployments to the Western Pacific in 1967 and 1968. In 1969, he volunteered for service as officer-in-charge of a Swift Boat with Coastal Division 12 in Danang, South Vietnam. Bradley was skipper of PCF-24 (Patrol Craft Fast–24) and later served as Operations and Executive Officer with Coastal Division 12. He served as ACTOV Officer during the turnover of U.S. Navy craft to the Vietnamese Navy in March 1970. Bradley is listed in the Swift Boat Crew Directory for Da Nang in 1969.[2] He left the Navy as a Lieutenant in April 1970.

Business career

Bradley began his business career in 1971 in the International Division of Citicorp, with subsequent postings in Beirut, Lebanon; Johannesburg, South Africa; Frankfurt and Hamburg, West Germany; and later in New York and London. He was involved in launching an institutionally oriented emerging health care equity fund and an Islamic investment product.

In 1985, Bradley resigned from Citibank and moved to Boston to pursue the creation of a private bank. He founded Boston Private Bank & Trust Company in 1987, where he served as president and CEO until 1992 and continued as a director through 1994. In 2021, Boston Private was acquired by Silicon Valley Bank.[3] Bradley also served on the Board of Governors of the Investment Adviser Association for seven years.

In 1993, Bradley collaborated with Joseph D. Sargent, then Chairman of Conning & Co. in Hartford, to acquire the company’s retail brokerage division and transform it into a registered investment advisor. Timothy H. Foster joined as co-founder in January 1994, and Bradley, Foster & Sargent, Inc. (BFS) commenced business in July of that year. Bradley served as president and CEO until 2017 and is currently chairman and portfolio manager. As of April 2025, BFS managed over $8 billion in assets.[1]
