Born in New York City in 1983 to Kelly Houston, Eggers' early years were marked by a move to Laramie, Wyoming. His mother later married Walter Eggers, and the family expanded with the arrival of twins, Max and Sam. Relocating to Lee, New Hampshire, in 1990, Eggers' stepfather's role as a provost at the University of New Hampshire played a pivotal role in their move. Inspired by his New England childhood, he frequently visited the Plimoth Plantation in Plymouth, Massachusetts, while crafting his first feature.
