Richard L. Sandfield is an American ventriloquist of the act Richard and Willie.

Early life

Richard L. Sandfield was born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1937. He attended Manassas High School in Memphis. He was a member of the Student Council, president of the Science Club and a member of the basketball team.

He entered the US Airforce in 1954 and was honorably discharged after being stationed in California. Seeing a great ventriloquist by the name of Aaron Williams inspired him to pursue the profession. He purchased a Davenport Ventriloquist’s Dummy from England and began practicing for hours and writing material.

Career

Sandfield began working in small clubs around Los Angeles, mainly the Parisian Room, a jazz club located at La Brea Ave. and Washington Blvd. His big break came with The John Levy Talent Management Agency where he worked with such artists as Nancy Wilson, Joe Williams, The Temptations, Roberta Flack, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Withers, appeared on the Black Omnibus hosted by James Earl Jones, Mike Douglas Show, What's Happening and much more.

He performed at the Apollo Theater, the Carter Barron Amphitheater, the Fisher Theater and quite a few others. His second break came by way of the recording industry where he was able to record five albums with Dooto Records and seven albums with Laff Records. These recordings helped to solidify his place in comedic history.[1] His work with Richard Pryor and Red Foxx, just to name a few, made Richard and Willie an even more sought after act onstage, on records, on television and in print media such as Ebony magazine,[2] Jet magazine,[3] and other print publications.

Later Life

Richard married Anita Riles after dating for many years. They reside in Southern California.
