Richard James is a British actor, playwright, novelist, and podcast host. Since 1992 he has had roles in both TV and film, as well as involvement in a number of theater productions. He is the author of the Bowman of the Yard book series, alongside several short stories and plays. He is mostly known for his role of Officer Hubble Orrin in Gerry Anderson's Space Precinct[1] series and Mr. Kronkite in the Mysti Show.
Playwright and author
He has written almost thirty plays,[1] some (Being Rose, Bill and Ben, Blood on Canvas, The Dreaming, I Am Hamlet, Moving On, The Nth Degree, There's Something about Bernard, Vision Impaired, White Lies) winning awards in the UK.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8] He is the author of the Victorian-era detective Bowman of the Yard series, and has published an autobiography entitled Space Precinct Unmasked,[9] in which he wrote about his experiences working on the series and with Thunderbirds creator Gerry Anderson.[9]
Work in television and movies
James has had minor roles in a large number of TV dramas and soap operas, including Pie in the Sky, Doctors, Eastenders, Crossroads, Drop the Dead Donkey, as well as starring in the mini-series Casanova alongside David Tennant. He has also had roles in The Mysti Show, M.I. High, My Parents are Aliens and My Spy Family on CITV and CBBC.
As well as TV appearances, James has also starred in several movies including Great Expectations, and A Bunch of Amateurs.
Stage work
From 2015 to 2020, he has toured around the UK in productions adapted from the novels of David Walliams, playing Aunt Alberta in Awful Auntie[10][11] and playing another role in the Olivier Award nominated Gangsta Granny.[12][13][14]
Audio work
James has lent his voice to a number of audio adventures from Big Finish Productions, set in the worlds of Doctor Who and Terrahawks.[15] He currently hosts the weekly Gerry Anderson Podcast with Jamie Anderson and Chris Dale, as well as a monthly podcast for the Bowman of the Yard series.
Richard and the gerry anderson universe
James became involved with the Gerry Anderson Universe when he auditioned for the Space Precinct series and won the part for Creon officer Hubble Orrin, as well as played additional guest characters. It is during that one-year contract that he also met the woman who would become his wife. He has written a detailed account of his work on the series in the Space Precinct Unmasked book published in 2014.[9]
His involvement with the worlds of Gerry Anderson didn’t end with his role in Space Precinct however; he is currently co-host of the official Gerry Anderson Podcast alongside Jamie Anderson and has done some voice works for the audio series Terrahawks from Big Finish Productions and in the upcoming series Firestorm.[16]
