Richard Burki (born 23 January 1991 in Prague) is one of the early pioneers of immersive sound and spatial audio[1]. An innovator, entrepreneur, composer, record producer, and Grammy-certified audio engineer of Dutch-Bulgarian origin, Burki is known for his work for artists like David Guetta, Tïesto, Afrojack, Max Cooper, The Metropole Orchestra, Mason, Dragonette, Joep Beving and The Echo Collective amongst others[2]. Richard Burki is also the co-founder and CEO of Future Phonic Studios, a production company specialised in immersive 3D audio which he co-founded with his partner Teodora Dimcheva in 2014.

Career

2016-2018 Abbey Road Institute

Richard Burki educated professionals in the emerging fields of virtual and augmented reality about immersive sound and spatial audio technologies in collaboration with Abbey Road Institute until 2018. This culminated in several workshops and speaker engagements at events such as CopenX[3], Amsterdam Dance Event[4], Buma/Stemra's "Music In Motion"[5][6], Immersive Tech Week[7], Met Ams, British Phonographic Industry[8], the VR/XR Base and more, whilst hosting several guest speakers during their events such as David Miles Huber (author of “Modern Recording Techniques”), Mirek Stiles (head of products at Abbey Road Studios), Tom Pearce (former Assistant/Engineer to Elton John) and Robin Reumers (founder of Leapwing Audio).

2017-2020 Wisseloord Studios

From 2017 to 2020 Richard Burki and Future Phonic Studios partnered with music recording studio Wisseloord Studios, a studio in Hilversum originally established by Phillips to host its subsidiary Polygram music label artists. The studio is amongst the Netherlands historic and iconic recording studio facilities since its official opening on the 19th of January 1978 by Prince Claus and has hosted artists such as Elton John, Metallica, Akon, Def Leppard, Herman Brood, Foo Fighters, Iron Maiden, The Police, Paul McCartney, Rammstein, Sade, Simple Minds, Sting, Tina Turner, U2, The Rolling Stones, and Michael Jackson.

At Wisseloord Studios Burki established a 3D production suite and developed a creative network focused on exploring the applications of immersive audio and spatial sound. This culminated in a range of projects from location based experiences such as the "Room To Breathe" at Outernet in London[9], virtual reality and games such as the "A'Dam VR Rollercoaster"[10] rides in Amsterdam and Scheveningen. SInce then, Burki has contributed to over 100 music releases[2] and projects for artists such as Tiesto, Metropol Orkest, Joep Beving, Afrojack, Sam Feldt, Max Cooper, Mason, Bakermat, David Guetta, Echo Collective, Ben Lukas Boysen, Dragonette, OwnBoss, Lucas & Steve, Tyga, and Michael Stearns. Burki has also contributed to cinema productions such as the trailer for Transformers: Rise of The Beasts[11] and theatre productions such as the Taste 360 Experience[12], as well as projects for clients such as Massive Music, MediaMonks, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Spinnin’ Records, and Deutsche Grammophon.

2021 Artificial Intelligence

Richard Burki assisted music platform LANDR with the development of their AI enabled mastering solutions, specifically focusing on its immersive and spatial audio applications, providing LANDR with professional insights that helped them guide and evaluate the development of their tools for 3D audio.[13][14][15][16]

2021 The "Taste 360 Theatre" Experience

In 2021 Burki was hired to record and co-produce the “Taste” music album to accompany the premiere of the Taste 360 Theatre in Amsterdam directed by Ola Mafaalani featuring Dragan Bakema and produced by Guirec Van Slingelandt.[17][18][19][20]

The album consists 16 songs with music composed by Joep Beving together with Echo Collective and recorded by Richard Burki at Galaxy Studios in Belgium together with Patrick Lemmens, with the rest of the production on the album taking place at Burki’s home studio in Amsterdam.

The music premiered during "Taste 360 Theatre" experience in 2021[21][22][23][24][25] on a custom 3D sound system that Burki helped configure at the Amsterdome in Amsterdam. The Taste album is amongst the first[26] to be conceived, recorded and produced in 3D for formats such as Dolby Atmos.

2022 Grammy Certification

In 2022 Burki produced the Dolby Atmos mixes for the song entitled “Hero” by David Guetta and Afrojack in 2021[27], a song that was listed 22nd on the Billboard charts in the US for the category of "Hot Dance/Electronic Songs" and was nominated for a Grammy in the category of “Best Dance/Electronic Recording” during the 64th annual Grammy Awards in 2022.[28][29][30][31][32]

2023 Undisclosed Feature Film Project

In 2023 Burki started working on his first feature film for an undisclosed project that will be amongst the first to be entirely produced using 3D audio techniques. The project is already supported for funding by the Nederlands Filmfonds with an intended release date currently projected for 2025/2026.
