His work has largely centered on inequality and international development studies.
Early life and education
Born in Tepeapulco-Ciudad Sahagún, Hidalgo, Mexico, Fuentes-Nieva graduated with a bachelor's degree in Economics from El Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas (CIDE) in Mexico City and undertook postgraduate Economics studies at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) in Barcelona.[1]
Career
Fuentes-Nieva's work in Economics began at the Inter-American Development Bank in Mexico City, where he was involved in research projects on income poverty, social mobility, and job security.[1] He later joined the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and served as a Senior Researcher and Senior Economic Advisor from 2004 to 2012.[1] During this period, Fuentes-Nieva contributed to multiple Human Development Reports for UNDP and co-authored the World Bank's World Development Report in 2010.[2]
He later played a significant role in shaping the research capabilities and intellectual framework of Oxfam, a global organization dedicated to ending poverty injustice. He served as the Head of Research for Oxfam Great Britain from 2012 to 2015, leading a team that conducted research on various aspects of poverty to support the organization's global campaigns.[3] During his tenure, Fuentes-Nieva focused on addressing extreme inequality through research centered on wages, gender justice, fiscal and tax reform, among other issues. In 2015, he became the Chief Executive Officer of Oxfam Mexico, where he furthered the organization's efforts to combat poverty, inequality, and human rights issues in Mexico.[4]
Currently, Fuentes-Nieva works as an international consultant. His recent roles have included: Scientific Coordinator of the French Development Agency in Mexico, Chief Economist of Data-Pop Alliance.[5] (a data-science think tank), and Director of Equity Protection at ODI (formerly the Overseas Development Institute).[6] He also works with the United Nations Development Programme and UN Women on projects related to international development, data analysis, policy research, and strategy. In these roles, he continues to contribute to research and policy initiatives to reduce regional inequality and promote sustainable development.
Publications
Fuentes-Nieva has authored and co-authored numerous publications on economics, inequality, and development. He contributed to the 2007 and 2008 UNDP Human Development Report, which revealed the imminent threat of climate change as the defining international development challenge of the 21st Century. "Working for the Few" (2014), became the first in a series of influential Oxfam documents on inequality, gaining recognition from world leaders, including Barack Obama, Christine Lagarde, and Bernie Sanders.[7][8] A subsequent work in 2016, "An Economy for the 1%: How privilege and power in the economy drive extreme inequality and how this can be stopped" analyzed global income and wealth data, revealing the extent of the global inequality crisis.[9][10]
