Ricardo "Demente" Abreu (born April 27, 1984) is a Brazilian former mixed martial artist and Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt. He gained wider recognition after competing on the reality television series The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 3 and later fighting in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).[1]
Jiu-jitsu career
Before transitioning to mixed martial arts, Abreu competed in Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournaments as a black belt competitor. He trained under Rodrigo Cavaca and built his career competing in major events in Brazil and internationally.[1] Abreu was part of the generation of Brazilian heavyweights active in the late 2000s and early 2010s, competing in both gi and no-gi formats.[2]
Mixed martial arts career
The Ultimate Fighter
Abreu competed on the third season of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 3, a reality television series produced by the UFC.[1]
During the preliminary round of the competition, Abreu advanced after defeating Willian Steindorf. In the quarterfinals, he defeated Guilherme Vasconcelos by unanimous decision. Abreu was eliminated in the semifinal round after losing to Márcio Alexandre Jr. via split decision.[3]
Ultimate Fighting Championship
Abreu made his UFC debut on May 31, 2014 at UFC Fight Night: Miocic vs. Maldonado, where he defeated Wagner Gomes via rear-naked choke submission in the second round.[3]
His second UFC appearance took place on June 6, 2015 at UFC Fight Night: Boetsch vs. Henderson, where he faced Jake Collier and lost by split decision.[4]
Abreu was later scheduled to face Dan Kelly at UFC 193, but withdrew from the bout due to injury.[5]
