Rev John Caulfield (19th July 1878 - 10th June 1941) was the parish priest of St. Luke's, Pinner, Middlesex.[1] In 1902 he was ordained at Waterford Cathedral. He later went on to serve at Westminster diocese at Somers Town, Parsons Green, East Ham, Poplar, Willesden, Ongar and finally at Pinner in 1914.[2]

Rev. John Caulfield was very popular among celebrities at the time and in 1925, Steve Donoghue, a leading flat-race jockey, and Rev. Caulfield organised the famous "Pinner Donkey Derby and Fete". It was a raced on Shetland ponies by professional jockeys and drew huge crowds to Pinner. The Derby was a organised as a charity event to help raise funds for the church and local area[3]. The final Pinner Donkey Derby was held on 7th July 1939. Rev. Caulfield is now fondly remembered as the "Jockeys' Priest".[4]

The Reverend also successfully achieved a national shrine for St. Philomena, the patron saint of infants, babies, and youth. A shrine was erected at the church on Love Lane, Pinner before being replace by a basilica in 1957.[5][6][7]

In 2014 the new residential development of Caulfield Gardens in Pinner was named in honour of Rev. John Caulfield.[8]
