Rev. Dr. Dominic Savio, S.J. (born circa 1960s) is an Indian Jesuit priest, economist, and academic leader. He has been serving as Principal of St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous), Kolkata, a prestigious Jesuit institution, since 1 November 2017 . In June 2025, he was appointed Secretary of the Jesuit Secretariat for Higher Education in South Asia.[1]

Early Life and Education

Savio received his early education at De Britto School, a Jesuit-run institution in Devakottai, Tamil Nadu . He earned a B.A. in Economics from St. Joseph’s College, Tiruchirappalli, followed by an M.A. and M.Phil. in Economics from Loyola College, Chennai, and completed his Ph.D. in Economics at Burdwan University, focusing on international trade and econometrics[2]. His theological and philosophical formation took place at De Nobili College, Jnana Deepa Vidyapeeth (Pune), and Vidyajyoti (Delhi) [3].

Jesuit Formation and Early Career

Entering the Society of Jesus at Dhyan Ashram, Kolkata, Savio was ordained in 1996. He later served as Rector of the St. Xavier’s Jesuit community from December 2013 to January 2020[4].

Academic and Administrative Career

In 2000, he began teaching Economics at St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata. Over two decades, he progressed to Vice Principal and Deputy Principal, before assuming the role of Principal in November 2017[5]. In addition, he serves in key governance roles including President of the Alumni Association, and holds positions on the governing bodies of the college and St. Xavier’s University[6].
