The Reinhold Burger Schule is an integrated secondary school in Pankow district of Berlin, named after the inventor of the thermos, Reinhold Burger.

History

At the beginning of the 20th century, Pankow was a developing suburb of Berlin, which in 1913 already had 21,524 inhabitants.[1]

Around the turn of the century, many new buildings were built, including the five-storey school building. The erection of the masonry building[2] took two years and was completed in 1900.[3] Until the Pankow town hall was built in 1902, the building was free-standing facing Breite Straße, now it stands in the shadow of the town hall.[4]

From the 1920s until the end of World War II, the school was a junior high school only for boys,[5] named after Carl Peters.[6]

After the end of war,Soviet command of the district Pankow moved into the buildings around the town hall.[7] The Soviet military court had its seat in today's school building. The school was dissolved when the building was confiscated by the Red Army.

Since 1950, the school has been freely accessible to students again. In the GDR, the school was called Cäsar-Horn-Oberschule, named after Caesar Horn, a resistance fighter against National Socialism.[8] Already in GDR times, the school building and the next door were listed[4] and renovated.

As a result of renovation work, that was completed in December 2008,[3] the Hauptschule was converted into an integrated secondary school in several construction phases while classes were still ongoing.[3]

Cooperation

The school cooperates with several other schools, such as the neighboring Carl-von-Ossietzky-Gymnasium, together they have many associations and projects, such as the Kulturagenten for creative schools.[9] The cooperation with the gymnasium was sought because, 2007 there were increasing conflicts between students both schools. The cooperation takes place, for example, in the form of joint art project days. On December 14, 2007, the Reinhold Burger Schule, the Carl von Ossietzky Gymnasium and the police department of section 13 signed a corresponding cooperation agreement.[10][11]

The school has other collaborations and partnerships with the Heinz Brandt Schule, the Max Bill Schule.[12]

The Berlin Pankow Business District and the Pankow Education Initiative.

Particularities

The school has a student newspaper called Volle Kanne, which received, twice the first place in category, Secondary Schools. The award ceremony was accompanied by the Tagesschau. The school also has several psychologists that can help students with school problems or other stuff.

Since 2014, the Reinhold Burger Schule[13] has held the title School without Racism – School with Courage. The school regularly organizes political education projects.[14] This includes a memorial trip to Auschwitz[14] for juniors.

At the end of the school year, a summer festival takes place every year, to which students, parents and teachers are invited. In addition to a musical stage program and other contributions, there is a theme every year on which the classes present self made projects.[15][16]
