Rebecca Gernon is an Irish-born architect, master planner, and designer. She graduated from University College Dublin, Richview campus, with a degree in architecture and was accredited by the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI). She is the founder and principal of Serendipity by Design, and SBD International, with offices in Dubai, Dublin, London, and Manilla. Gernon was one of the first female architects to own and operate a firm in the United Arab Emirates.[citation needed]
Education
Gernon completed her secondary education at Loreto College, Crumlin, and in her third-level education, she graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture from University College Dublin. She played on the UCD women's basketball team during her tenure.[citation needed]

Career
After graduation, Gernon worked for WS Atkins under the direction of Tom Wright She had the opportunity to be involved in the design of the Burj Al Arab, an internationally renowned architectural marvel. Among her notable accomplishments was the creation of the hotel's world-renowned helipad,[5]which drew inspiration from an unexpected source - the iconic Starship Enterprise. The helipad is above the building's 59th floor and has been used as an auto racetrack, a boxing ring, a tennis match, and the highest kite surfing jump in history.
Following her experience at Atkins, Gernon embarked on a new chapter by joining Decorpoint, an interior design firm headquartered in Italy. She assumed the responsibility of General Manager, leading the company's Dubai office and spearheading the development of its commercial interior design portfolio. During her tenure, Gernon significantly contributed to several prestigious hotels, including The Fairmont Dubai, Grand Hyatt Dubai, Meridien Mina Seyahi, and Le Royal Meridien[6]
In 2001, Gernon established her own firm, Serendipity by Design, specializing in master planning architecture, and interior and landscape design. While the company is headquartered in Dubai, it operates satellite offices in Manila, Dublin, and London. Gernon has been responsible for many iconic buildings across the UAE and other Middle Eastern countries, including the Grand Millennium Tabuk Hotel[7] in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. According to Gernon, her firm is focused on ontological design and sustainable architecture. Gernon introduces cutting-edge technology in her practice and was among the first to use 3D technology for client walkthroughs.
Gernon advocates for women in architecture and engineering by actively engaging with schools and universities to inspire and empower young women pursuing careers. With her extensive experience and notable achievements, she recognizes the importance of sharing her knowledge and insights with the next generation. Through her engagements, Gernon discusses the opportunities and contributions that women can make in architecture, encouraging them to embrace their creativity, unique perspectives, and problem-solving skills.
