Reangsei Phos
Reangsei Phos is a Film director, writer, and filmmaker based in Toronto. He dropped out of the Toronto Metropolitan University to bring more Asian representation to the motion picture industry.[1]
His debut short film Talisman (2022) premiered in the spring of 2022 and won the audience's choice award at the National Film Festival for Talented Youth (NFFTY)[2] in Seattle. He was subsequently picked up by a distribution label on YouTube, ALTER on June, 2022.[3]
Early Life
Reangsei was born to Cambodian-China that escaped the Cambodian genocide perpetrated by the Khmer Rouge. His mother has China, which influenced her beliefs due to feng shui. Phos describes his experience growing up in an Asian household with a Superstition|superstitious mother, which is the inspiration for his short film Talisman (2022). [4]
Career
Talisman
In 2020, Phos dropped out of first semester at Toronto Metropolitan University to work on his debut film, Talisman.[5]
Due to filming beginning in 2020, COVID-19 restrictions, staffing issues and funding because major challenges for Phos. He crowdfunded the film raising over $10,000 on IndieGoGo][6]. The film was picked up by ALTER and was released via YouTube on June 16 2022. [7]
#StopAsianHate
Later that year, Phos released a Public service announcement film, #StopAsianHate to raise awareness on Xenophobia and racism related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film was executively produced by NextShark and China Mac. The film was released on Instagram and went viral the same day, garnering over 1,000 reposts in the first 24 hours.[8]
All Bark Never Bite
In June 2022, Phos filmed All Bark Never Bite. The film was completed in October 2022 and is currently in the festival circuit.[9]
