Career

Artistic practice

From 1970 to 1989, Elman focused on abstract art, exhibiting in museums and galleries internationally and participating in the U.S. State Department Art in Embassies program[2]. In 1989, he shifted to large-scale mixed-media portraiture, producing over 400 works, primarily of figures in the arts.[3] [4] [5] [6] Four of his portraits are in the collection of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery [7] and have been exhibited there. Elman’s portraits have been recognized for their innovative technique, combining photographic printouts with oil painting. Four of his portraits are in the collection of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and have been exhibited there.[8] Elman has also documented the Miami arts community through portraiture since relocating there in 2012.[9] [10]

Publishing and editorial work

In 1985, Elman co-founded Provincetown Arts magazine, an annual publication dedicated to the cultural history and contemporary arts of Provincetown, Massachusetts.[11] [12] The magazine is archived in major libraries and is regarded as a notability anchor for his career.[11] In 2014, Elman founded the digital publication Inspicio, renamed ArtSpeak in 2023 and sponsored by Florida International University.[13]
