Ravish Kumar Tiwari (02-09-1981 to 19-02-2022) was born in Emilia village in Deoria district of Utter Pradesh in India. He was an Indian journalist and worked as the Chief of National Bureau of The Indian Express. He also worked for The Economics Times as Senior Assistant Editor, for India Today as Associate Editor, and for The Indian Express as Senior Assistant Editor.

Ravish was selected for Rhodes scholarship in 2005 while he was perusing his dual degree (B.Tech plus M.Tech) course from IIT Mumbai. He became the first IIT student to receive the Rhodes scholarship.

Biography

Early life and Education

Ravish Kumar Tiwari was born in Emilia village in Deoria district of Utter Pradesh on 02-09-1981. He was the elder of the two sons of his parents. His father Subhash Chandra Tiwari served as a state government employee and mother has been a housewife. Ravish received his primary education from Khalilabad of Basti district (now in Sant Kabir Nagar district). After fifth class he qualified for Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) and joined JNV of Basti district in 1991. He completed his schooling till twelfth class from JNV Basti in 1998. Ravish was a bright student from the beginning and his academic excellence kept on growing over the time. He was among eighty students from Basti district who were selected for Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in 1991. He secured all over India third rank among the students of JNV in high school board exam conducted by CBSE in 1996.

Ravish qualified the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted for admissions in Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) in 2000 and joined IIT Bombay for a five year dual degree course (B.Tech plus M.Tech) in Metallurgical Engineering and Material Science.[1] In 2005 he appeared for Rhodes Scholarship and was selected along with Atishi [2] among six from India. He became first student from any of the IITs to qualify for Rhodes scholarship. Afterwards, he went to University of Oxford to pursue masters in Comparative Social Policy and wrote his thesis on Social Justice in Secondary Education in India: State-wise Comparison.

Marriage and Children

Ravish married Poojya Trivedi in 2009 after a courtship of few years. He did not have any children when he died.

Career

After his return from Oxford University, Ravish joined The Indian Express as the Principal Correspondent in 2006. He worked in the capacity of Principal Correspondent, Special Correspondent, Assistant Editor, and Senior Assistant Editor in The Indian Express till 2014. In 2014, Ravish joined India Today as Associate Editor and in 2015 joined The Economic Times as the Senior Assistant Editor. In June 2017, he returned to The Indian Express as the Chief of National Bureau - the post which he held till the time of his demise.

Distinction as a Journalist

Ravish Tiwari was a noted political journalist and was admired by his colleagues for his academic political reporting and grounded political and social analysis.[3] He always remained unbiased in his reporting and was known for asking even the hardest of the questions to interviewee politicians with firmness but politeness.[4] Because of his rooted understanding and thorough coverage of the region, Ravish correctly predicted the victory of Bharatiya Janata Party|Bharatiya Janata Party in Utter Pradesh in 2017 assembly elections.

Illness and Death

Ravish died on 19-02-2022 after battling colon cancer for around two years. During his battle with the illness, his family comprising of his parents, his wife Poojya, and his younger brother Manish stood firmly by his side. On his death at the young age of 40, Indian President Mr. Ram Nath Kovind expressed his disappointment saying that his sudden and shocking demise silences a distinct voice in news media. Indian Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi gave his condolence saying that (with his demise) a bright career in the media world comes to an end. [5] [6]
