Rana Kazkaz (born May 4, 1971) is a Syrian-American Filmmaker and Assistant Professor at Northwestern University in Qatar. Her short film Mare Nostrum was selected in over 100 films festivals, including Sundance Film Festival (2017)[1] and won over 30 international prizes. Her first feature film The Translator was selected for the Toronto International Film Festival in 2020 and had its world premiere at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in 2020.[2][3]

Early life and education

Rana Kazkaz was born in Grenoble, France to a Polish-American mother and Syrian father.[4] She studied at received her Bachelor of Arts|BA from Oberlin College and MFA from Carnegie Mellon University. She also studied at the Moscow Art Theatre School in Russia, the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in Waterford, Connecticut and was one of eight women selected for the American Film Institute’s Directing Workshop for Women in 2006. Most recently, she was selected to participate in Ryan Murphy (filmmaker)|Ryan Murphy's Half Foundation in 2017.[5][6]

Personal life

Kazkaz speaks English, French, Arabic and Russian. Having left Damascus, as a result of the on-going conflict in Syria, she currently lives in Doha, Qatar. In addition to being a filmmaker, she is also an Assistant Professor at Northwestern University Qatar, where she teaches narrative filmmaking.[7]
