About

Ramaswamy Viswanathan, M.D., DrMedSc, DLFAPA, is a distinguished psychiatrist, researcher, and academician. He was born in Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, India, and raised in his maternal uncle's home in Chennai, Tamilnadu. He completed his education at Loyola College and Madras Medical College in Chennai. Viswanathan is married to Kusum Viswanathan, a pediatric hematologist-oncologist, and they have three children. He has held numerous leadership positions within the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and other national organizations:[1].

Viswanathan is a professor, interim chair of psychiatry, director of the consultation-liaison psychiatry and fellowship, and co-chair of the Faculty Wellness Committee at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University[2]. He is board certified in psychiatry, internal medicine, and consultation liaison, geriatric, addiction and forensic psychiatry. His research has been in physician communication, ethics, innovations in psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy, treatment adherence in gynecologic cancers, children’s sickle cell disease, HIV, and substance use[3].

He has been elected by members of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) as the next President-elect, and his term will begin in May 2024. His priorities as APA president are enhancing the quality of patient care, augmenting the psychiatry workforce, increasing funding for mental health research and services, and promoting physician wellness, professional development, diversity, and inclusion.

Leadership Trajectory

Viswanathan has occupied various leadership roles within the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and other national organizations. At present, he holds the position of APA Assembly Representative and serves as the chair of the Committee on Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry for the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry. Prior to this, he served as an M/UR Trustee on the APA Board of Trustees, and as a secretary for the New York State Psychiatric Association. Vision

Among Dr. Viswanathan’s priorities as APA president, his priorities are to[4]

· Enhance the quality of care that patients receive and combat the issue of inadequately qualified individuals encroaching into psychiatric practice.

· Strengthen the psychiatry workforce by increasing its numbers.

· Allocate greater funds for mental health research and services, with a specific focus on substance use disorders, climate psychiatry, and children’s mental health.

· Ensure that clinical work conditions are satisfactory and that adequate reimbursement is provided.

· Mitigate the burdens imposed by third parties on public and private psychiatric practices.

· Foster the well-being of psychiatrists.

· Encourage the professional development of trainees and early-career psychiatrists
