Maharajah Ram Chandra Dev or Ram Chandra Dev was the 15th king of the Suryavansh dynasty that ruled over the kingdom of Jeypore and Nandapur. He succeeded his father at the age of 22 and died in mysterious circumstances while going to the battlefield to face the rebellion of his brother, Balaram Dev III. He ruled for a short span of three years and proved to be a weak ruler.
Early Life
Ram Chandra Dev was the eldest son of Maharajadhiraj Raghunath Krishna Dev and Patta Maharani(the eldest of the two Chalukyan princesses married to the king). He was born in 1687, when the kingdom was powerful and prosperous under the leadership of his father.
Reign
Ram Chandra Dev was crowned in 1708 at the age of 22. His father left a consolidated kingdom with a skilled army and fair administration. The younger brother, Balaram Dev also held an honourable rank in the court. However, Ram Chandra proved to be an inexperienced and inefficient ruler.
Viziaram Raz, a member of the Pusapati clan of Sitaram Raz was a courtier of the former king, Raghunath Krishna Dev. After the death of the former king, he built a noble reputation in the court of Ram Chandra Dev. On the other hand, Balaram Dev was not fond of Viziaram’s growing reputation and his proximity to the royal affairs. However, Viziaram Raz was soon appointed as the chief minister of the king and this decision caused bitterness between the two brothers. The historian, Senapati describes this move as a political blunder for the kingdom.
Balaram was convinced that Viziaram was a treacherous ambitious man who should not be trusted. Whereas his brother had full confidence in him. However, Balaram’s suspicion was right because in 1711, Viziaram instigated the king to capture Balaram Dev but this did not happen because after knowing about the judgement he took over the fort of Narayanapatna and gathered an army. A large population in Jeypore as well as other parts of the kingdom supported the views of Balaram Dev which infuriated Ram Chandra.
The king announced a military campaign to the Narayanapatna Fort to defeat and capture Balaram Dev but the king died in mysterious circumstances in a few days of the battle.
Death
The Maharaja died in 1931 due to a long-term illness and because he did not have an heir, he was succeeded by his uncle Vikram Dev Varma.
