Ramón Amarilla is a retired senior non-commissioned officer of the Misiones Police Department and a prominent figure[1]in the wage demands of the province's police and prison personnel. In 2024, he served as the spokesperson for the Police and Prison Negotiation Board, leading protests for improved wages and working conditions. In May of that year, he led a significant demonstration in Posadas, which included a camp in front of Police Headquarters, attracting national media attention.[1]
In September 2024, Amarilla was arrested on charges of "sedition" and "conspiracy"[2]following an internal complaint alleging "plans" to take over the Police Headquarters. He was charged with organizing riots and inciting unrest, although no direct evidence was presented linking him to these acts. Despite his public and transparent statement in his defense, the Investigative Judge 3 of Posadas, Fernando Verón, ordered his pretrial detention, along with that of seven other former officers.
Amarilla remains detained in Cerro Azul Penitentiary Unit VIII, where he continues his fight for the rights of provincial public security workers. Despite his situation, he has announced his candidacy for provincial deputy from prison, seeking to represent the most vulnerable sectors and workers in the Misiones legislature.
His case has generated a debate about the criminalization of labor protests and the persecution of those who exercise their right to protest in defense of their labor rights.
