Ralf Möller (born 1964 in Freiburg/Elbe) is a German computer scientist whose research focuses on knowledge representation, particularly description logics, and artificial intelligence. He co-developed the RACER (Renamed ABox and Concept Expression Reasoner) description logic reasoner designed for expressive ontology languages.[1][2] The RACER system description paper has been cited more than 1,400 times according to Google Scholar.[3] RACER is discussed in survey literature on description logic reasoners.[4][5]
Since 2024, Möller has been a professor at the University of Hamburg and serves as director of the Institute of Humanities-Centered Artificial Intelligence (CHAI).[6] Since 2023, he has served as co-speaker of the Section for Artificial Intelligence of the German Informatics Society.[7]
Academic career[8][9]
Möller studied computer science at the University of Hamburg, where he received his doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) in 1996 and completed his habilitation in 2001.[10][11] He subsequently held professorial positions at the University of Applied Sciences Wedel, the Hamburg University of Technology, and the University of Lübeck before joining the University of Hamburg in 2024.[6][8][12][13][14]
Research
Möller's research focuses on description logics and artificial intelligence.[15] In an interview with the German public broadcaster NDR, he emphasized a mathematically grounded approach to artificial intelligence and its application in humanities research.[16]
