Dr. Rajiv Ranjan is an Indian economist and a career central banker working at the Reserve Bank of India.[1] He was born in the city of Jamshedpur in the easter state of Jharkhand, India. Rajiv Ranjan was appointed as Executive Director of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on May 2, 2022.[2] He is an ex-officio member of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Reserve Bank of India.[3] He also looks after the functioning of the Monetary Policy Department (MPD) of RBI which serves as the secretariat to the MPC alongside playing a key role in implementing monetary policy by assessing and forecasting liquidity conditions.[4]

Education

Dr. Rajiv Ranjan holds a Ph.D. degree, with a specialization in macroeconomic modelling from Mumbai University and a Masters in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics.[5] His thesis was titled “Modeling Capital Account of India’s Balance of Payments within the Framework of the Macroeconomic Model of the Indian Economy".

Career at RBI

Prior to his appointment as executive director, Ranjan was Adviser-in-Charge, MPD and Secretary to the MPC.[6] He was associated with the core functions of the Bank as per the RBI Act viz., successful implementation of goals of flexible inflation targeting framework which inter alia includes conducting bimonthly MPC meetings, preparing MPC resolution and Part B along with the Monetary Policy Report (MPR); the LOLR function, which became critical during the pandemic; and, management of liquidity during recent challenging and uncertain times.

Dr. Rajiv Ranjan has also served several high-level committees, task force and working groups formed by the Reserve Bank of India from time to time. For instance, during 2019, Ranjan served as a member of the Task Force on Offshore Rupee Markets under Dr. Usha Thorat as Chairperson and as a member of the Internal Working Group to Review Agricultural Credit headed by Mr. Mahesh Kumar Jain, Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India.[7][8]

He was head of two key Departments of the RBI during last four years i.e., the Monetary Policy Department (MPD) and the Department of Economic and Policy Research (DEPR).[9] Besides, Ranjan has also served as an Economic Policy expert at the Central Bank of Oman for three years.
