Islombekov Rajab Qaplanovich (31 December 1925 — 9 December 2011) was a soviet, uzbek scientist, biochemist, winner of Lenin prize in 1964.[1]

Biography

Rajab Islombekov (1925-2011) was an endocrinologist, a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, an honored scientist of the Republic of Uzbekistan, a doctor of medical sciences. He lived in Uzbekistan (UzSSR). Rajab Islombekov was born on December 31, 1925 in Tashkent. In 1947, he graduated from the Tashkent Medical Institute, and in 1950 he graduated from postgraduate studies with honors. In 1961, he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic "Clinical morphological study of endemic goitre"[2]

Scientific and organizational activity

Islombekov is one of the founders of the Institute of Endocrinology in Tashkent, where he worked for 18 years — first as the head of the laboratory, then as the head of the department of endocrinology. In 1967-1971, he was the director of the Tashkent Regional Medical Institute[3]

Scientific career

Islombekov's scientific interests were focused on the physiology and pathology of the thyroid gland, the problem of endemic goitre. He is considered one of the pioneers in the introduction of radioactive iodine diagnosis and treatment of thyroid diseases in the USSR. Rajab Islombekov proposed and substantiated the concept of the role of iodine and other trace elements in the multifactorial ethnology of endemic goiter, based on which a drug for the prevention and treatment of endemic goiter was created. Rajab Qaplanovich Islombekov was the organizer of many expeditions to study the etiology, pathogenesis and distribution of endemic goiter in Uzbekistan, and carried out mass iodine prophylaxis, as a result of which endemic goiter decreased dramatically in the republic [4]. Rajab Kaplanovich is the author of more than 150 scientific works on various problems of endocrinology, including 7 monographs. He made a great contribution to the training of highly qualified staff of endocrinologists. Under his guidance, 20 doctoral and candidate theses were prepared.

Awards

The work of Rajab Islombekov was highly appreciated by the government. His labor was awarded with the Order of the Red Banner and many medals. Islambekov Torakulov together with Yolkin Kholmatovich was awarded the Lenin Prize for the work "Exchange of iodine and thyroid hormones in some forms of thyroid pathology". In 2004, Rajab Islambekov was awarded with the international public award "Profession - Life" with the "Large Golden Statuette" and the Order "For Honor, Courage, Creativity, Kindness"[5]
