Raha Pazoki is a fellow of Higher Education Academy and an academic at Brunel University London. She is a medical doctor and epidemiologist working on cardiometabolic disorders [1]. She is the academic editor for the special Issue "Modern Methods in Cardiovascular Research" in the Healthcare (MDPI) journal [2].

Early life and education

Pazoki was born in Bijar to a half Kurdish family. After completing her primary and secondary education, she entered Bushehr University of Medical Sciences at the age of 16 [3]. She migrated to the Netherlands and studied epidemiology at Maters level at Erasmus University Rotterdam. She obtained a PhD degree in Medicine from the University of Amsterdam in 2015. She moved to the United Kingdom in 2016 to work as a Research Associate at Imperial College London in the group of Professor Paul Elliott and Professor Ioanna Tzoulaki. She has been an academic at Brunel University London since 2020.

Research and career

In 2010, Pazoki' s research on sudden cardiac death led to recognition of a genetic variant within the coxsackievirus and adenovirus receptor gene as a risk factor for ventricular fibrillation following myocardial infarction. In 2015, Pazoki provided major contribution to three research projects commissioned by the World Health Organisation leading to the publication of three crucial scientific articles cited by several policy documents [4][5][6]. In 2018, she was awarded a Rutherford Fellowship by the Medical Research Council in the UK to work on her proposed research "Determinants and Mechanisms Involved in Alcohol Consumption and its Health Consequences" [7] leading to publication of several high impact scientific articles on alcohol consumption and related disorders [8]. In 2022, Pazoki coordinated a team of academics and staff into submission of an Athena Swan silver application for the Department of Life Sciences at Brunel University London leading to the achievement of the first Athena Swan silver award at Brunel University London [9].
