Rabia Hussain Adamu is an educationist and development oriented progressive politician who served in various capacities as Director General, Rector of Jigawa State Polytechnic (now Hussaini Adamu Federal Polytechnic) and a commissioner in three administrations in Jigawa State.

She was born in Kazaure town of Jigawa state in 1958, Rabia Husaini Adamu attended junior primary school at Sultan Bello Integrated Primary School, Kaduna and completed senior primary education at Shekara Girls Boarding School, Kano in 1970. She proceeded to Queens College Yaba, Lagos from 1971 to 1975, and subsequently graduated from Ahmadu Bello University with a BA (Special Hons.) English Literature. Rabia also earned a dual Masters’ Degree program (MA) International Development Studies and M.Ed. from Ohio University USA from1980-1982.

She served as Project Manager, Democracy and Good Governance, Team Leader on COMPASS/USAID Education project, Deputy Chief of Party on Northern Education Initiative project. Rabia is an accomplished educationist whose passion and vision lead to the establishment of two schools: a community initiative that focuses on annual output of at least 30 girls and boys that can read, write and compute within Kazaure and rural environment since 1996. The other a private school, First Grade Comprehensive School, was established in the same year at Kano. Rabia is the founder and CEO of an NGO, Development in Action as well as a thriving consulting firm, Pristine Development Consultants In Kano.

SUMMARY OF SECTOR SPECIFIC CONTRIBUTIONS

Public Sector 1984-2019

Public sector career spanned a period of thirteen years and the following are some key engagements and areas of distinguished contributions and achievements:

• Lecturer English Language and Literature at the College of Arts and Sciences from1984 to 1988 • Acting Director of Planning and Research in the new Ministry for Women Affairs from1989 to 1990.

• Director General, Ministry for Social Development in Kano State 1990 to 1991.

• Special Advisor to the Military Administrator of Jigawa State in charge of ministries of Health and Education in 1991 when the state was created.

• Appointed founding Rector, Jigawa State Polytechnic, now Husaini Adamu Polytechnic, from 1992 to 1994.

• Appointed as the Hon. Commissioner, Jigawa State Ministry of Health and Social Development 1994-1997.

• Appointed Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Jigawa State 2015- 2019. 2.

Private Education sector

• Initiated a community school project in Kazaure from locally raised funds in 1996. The school supports the basic education needs of Kazaure community with an annual target of 30 girls and boys to be given the skill sets to be able to read write and compute with the support of Husaini Adamu Foundation subsidies till date.

• Similarly, in the same year 1996, I established and still successfully running First Grade Comprehensive school with full complement of structures supporting K-12 education services for the past twenty-five years.

NGO Sector 1997 to 2013

Rabia Maintained a special niche in the non-governmental sector working on various projects as the team leader, field office manager of several cycles of USAID funded Northern based integrated health, Education, Democracy and Good Governance as well as youth development projects from March 1997 to March of 2001.

Major Accomplishments

• Program Manager/Field Office Manager for Northern Cluster USAID/CEDPA Reproductive Health, Democracy and Good Governance projects from 1997 -2001, Adolescent Reproductive health, Northern Youth strategy.

• Deputy Chief of Party Northern Education Initiative, a large education sector reform project in Sokoto State from January 2010 to January July 2012

• Founder and Executive Director of a social sector services NGO, Development in Action (DIA)1997 • FLD Fellow of McArthur Foundation for Leadership and Development 2002-03

• State Team Leader, Community Participation for Action in the social Sector COMPASS/USAID project, Kano Project office CONSULTANCIES • Training Consultant on NGO Advocacy for Forward Nigeria,2001

• Organizational Development Consultant for Northern NGOs 2002 to 2004, WRAPPA, DFID Access to Justice A2J project in Jigawa State

• Major consultant for CREATIVES ASSOCIATEs pre-bid Capture phase prior to the commencement of USAID funded COMPASS/USAID project, 2003

• Social Sector Syndicate Team leader for social sector consultants that produced the final Strategic Agenda for Northern Nigeria ,STAND, under the auspices of Arewa Research and Development Project, (ARDP) 2012 to 2014

• Lead consultant for Family Health International- FHI360 pre-bid field research in preparation for education sector project for Northern States 2013.

• Consultant on National Defence Policy Review committee, Ministry of Defence 2013

• Lead Consultant for Chemonics INC Pre-bid and project design for USAID/Read Nigeria project, 2014

• Education Sector Reform specialist for Borno State Government 2019 • Women political participation training consultant for??

Political Participation

• Contribution to the political process which commenced with the contest for the Senatorial seat of Jigawa North-west constituency on the platform of the defunct Action Congress (AC) in the year 2007.

• Elected as the vice Chair of ACN Northwest at the 2008 Party’s National Convention and served in that capacity till 2014 merger of ACN, CPC and ANPP.

• Appointed member of the Merger Committee in 2014.

• Appointed member of the Presidential Campaign Council in 2014.

• Appointed Member of the Presidential Primary Convention in 2014.

• Appointed Honorable Commissioner, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology Dutse 2015 to 2019.

Volunteer Works

Established Husaini Adamu foundation for Education that supports the education of young indigent students from across the four LGAs of Kazaure emirate in Jigawa State.

• Member of Arewa Research and Development Project (ARDP) and Team Leader/Convener of Social Development education team that compiled the first ever Strategic Agenda for Northern Nigeria (STAND) from 2010/11

• Coordinator of National Almajirci Summit team working towards reformation of the Almajirci Education practices in Northern Nigeria

• Served as Mentor, Patron and Initiator of many youth and women NGOs and Associations too numerous to mention.
