Qian Jin (born March 28, 1976), from Nanjing, Jiangsu, is a professional diplomat of the People's Republic of China and a member of the Communist Party of China. He currently serves as Deputy Director-General of the Department of Press, Communication and Public Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China.[1]
Biography
Qian graduated from the Department of International Trade at Beijing International Studies University.[2] He later studied at the China Foreign Affairs University. In 1999, he began working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, serving in the Department of Press, Communication and Public Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, Embassy of China in South Africa, Department of International Organizations and Conferences of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, and the Embassy of China in Kenya, and undertook advanced studies at Stanford University's Hoover Institute for one year. During his tenure as Political Counselor at the Embassy of China in Kenya, he led a task force to negotiate in a rebel-controlled area in South Sudan and successfully rescued 12 abducted employees of China Water and Electric.[3][4] In 2018, Qian Jin was posted to the Consulate-General of China in New York. He served as Acting Consul General (Ambassadorial rank)[5][6] and as First Deputy Consul General (Chief of Mission) and spokesperson. He is a prominent figure in China–U.S. relations, having emphasized the importance of building a community with a shared future through cooperation, openness, inclusiveness, mutual benefit, and fairness.[7][8][9] Qian also spoke about the development of China–U.S. relations and the necessity of continued engagement.[10] He discussed the role of innovation in China’s economic growth and stressed the importance of science and high-tech industries.[11][12] He also worked to promote understanding of China’s COVID-19 policies among the American public.[13][14] In 2024, he returned to China and served as Minister-Counselor in the Department of North American and Oceanian Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China and enrolled at the Party School of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. In 2025, he was appointed Deputy Director-General of the Department of Press, Communication and Public Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China.[15]
Personal Life
Qian was born into a family of aviation industry officials. His father served as the first Director of the UAV Department of AVIC, Director of the Test Flight Bureau, and a member of the Science and Technology Committee.[16][17][18] His mother worked at AVIC Helicopter Co., Ltd.. Qian enjoys tennis, horseback riding, off-road driving, and diving.
