Purna Rai

Purna Rai (Purna Bahadur Rai) (Nepali : पुर्ण राई) (Born 24 Nov 1983) is a Nepali singer and musician. He is known as a famous singer in Nepali music field. He has sung more than 300 Nepali modern, ghazals, folk songs, Patriotic songs, Bhajan, pop songs, play backing vocals in movies and hundreds of songs in different languages. In addition to this, he has recorded personal albums such as Pahilo Bhet[1] (Folk Modern), Halka-Halka (Ghazal), Uttam vol.1&2, Sapana Collection vol.1&2 (Modern), Agni (Film), Ama, Akash ko Jun, Rickshawala (Film) Ankuran, Bijamphool, Best of Purna Rai, Dilwali.

In the year 2019, he has succeeded in writing his name in the world’s prestigious Guinness Book of World Records by making the music video of his own song the title of “Hamro Sajha Himal” [2](conservation of nature) at the highest altitude in the world (4,768m / 15,643.04ft).

Similarly, singer Purna Rai is also the first singer of the Nepali FIFA World Cup song (Oh. Oh. Ye. Yaa)[3]. In the year 2022, the music video shooting of the Nepali FIFA World Cup song sung by him was completed for the first time at the top of world’s highest peak Mt. Everest (8,848.86m).

Purna Rai is also the program coordinator of the International Scientific Conference on Climate Change which was held for the first time at the world’s highest peak Mt. Everest Base Camp (5,400m) on May 29, 2022. He also holds the American Book of Records[4] “ European Records Book[5] and The British World Record[6][7] holder for holding the world’s first adventurous international scientific conference.[8]

Early and Personal Life

Purna Rai was born in Solukhumbu district of Nepal. His father is Dhan Bahadur Rai and mother Hasta maya Rai. He has three brothers and one sister. He grew up in the village of Thulodhunga in Solukhumbu district. His family had a musical atmosphere. His brothers and sister used to lead local musical events. At the age of 5-6, he used to dance in children’s songs. But he doesn’t even remember being forced to play in the family musical atmosphere.

From a very young age, he entered the music industry. Purna Rai did his basic education up to class 5 at Shree Chandrodaya Basic School, Thulodhunga. He completed his schooling up to class 8 from Shree Himalaya Secondary School, Khastap, while he completed his school level studies from Shree Kharikhola Secondary School, Solukhumbu.

Purna Rai, who started learning formal classical music from 2002, released his first solo musical album “Pahilo Bhet”[1] in 2008. With the incredible success of that solo musical album, he became a professional singer. He married Manisa Kirati in 2018 and they have a son.

Music Career

Purna Rai’s first musical debut “Pahilo Bhet”[1][1] solo musical album in 2008 established him at once. He also won the National Award for Best New Artist of the Year. This success became a challenge for him and made him practice more. He became busy in stage shows by singing songs from various collection albums, typical folk songs and films. In 2015, he published a ghazal album “Halka-Halka”. As he is a student of classical music, he showed amazing singing ability in this ghazal.

Ghazal Halka-Halka represented quality music and was also nominated for several national awards. Singer Rai, who has recorded more than 300 songs, released the musical album “Pahilo Bhet”[1][2], Halka-Halka, Uttam Vol. 1&2, Sapana Collection Vol.1&2, film Agni, Riksawala, Upama, Angkuran, Utsaw, Amar, Hamro Sajha Himal, Mero Desh, Bhajan Mantra, Bijamphool, Himal Ko Desh [9](Patriotic songs), Oh. Oh. Ye. Yaa (1st nepali fifa world cup song) and more.

Apart from Nepali language, Purna Rai has also sang songs in English, Hindi, Maithili, Japanese and German languages, while Rai,[3] Magar, Gurung, Sherpa, Dhimal, Kusunda, Limbu, Raute, Tamang and Tharu language songs have been sung within the country of Nepal.

Purna Rai has performed musical concerts in 77 districts of Nepal. In 2011, he performed solo concerts in Innsbruck City, Austria, Vienna, Germany and Italy. In 2015, he performed in France, and in 2017, he has performed solo concerts in Villaburca, Zurich and Lausanne City, Switzerland.

In his continuous musical journey of 15 years, he has created history by singing the first Nepali FIFA World Cup song (Oh. Oh. Ye. Yaa)[4] in 2022 and added another history by shooting the music video of the same song for the first time on the peak of the world’s highest peak, Mt. Everest (8,848.86 m).[10][5]

“Hamro Sajha Himal” song is related to nature conservation. Purna Rai holds the prestigious Guinness World Record for “The Highest Music Video on Land” by shooting and producing the music video of the song, which is about protecting nature for the sake of life and the world, at the highest altitude in the world (4,768 meters / 15,643.04ft).

  • Documentary Film Festival – 2018[14]

He is also adept at making full-length documentaries. He has also taken a documentary making course. His documentary “Kingdom of Himalayas” won the International Excellent Documentary Award in 2018.

  • American Book of Record Holder – 2023[15][8]

On May 29, 2022, the “World’s Highest Global Warming Summit – 2022” organized by the World Records Holder Society was held at Mt. Everest Base Camp under the international coordination of Purna Rai. The “American Book of Records[4][16]” has certified the most challenging and historic program of the 3-hour international scientific conference held at the world’s highest altitude of 5,400 meters for climate change awareness. The scientific conference had presentations by scientists from University of Colorado, USA, Tribhuvan University, Nepal and Colorado University, Bolder, USA.

Purna Rai has sung the first Nepali FIFA World Cup song for FIFA World Cup 2022 (Qatar). Amazingly, the song was released from the top of the highest peak Mt. Everest (8,848.86 m) and the entire video shoot of the song was also done at the top of Everest.
