Afolabi Olaoye (born 23 August 1961) is a Nigerian monarch. He is the 21st Soun of Ogbomosho[1][2][3][4][5]
Early life and ancestry
Oba Afolabi Olaoye, was born Prince Afolabi Olaoye on the 23 August 1961 into the family of Prince Samuel Oladunni Oyatoro Olaoye of the Olaoye Royal House which is one of the five royal families in the town of Ogbomosho. He is a direct descendant of the 9th Soun of Ogbomosho,Late Oba Laoye Orumogege of the Baiyewuwon ruling house of Ode-Aremo, Ogbomosho.[6][7]
Education
Afolabi Olaoye earned a BA Honors in English and Literary Studies from Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria (formerly known as University of Ife) in 1982 and thereafter proceeded to the University of Ibadan where he obtained a master's degree in Industrial and Labor Relations with a focus on Human Resources Management in 1987[8][9]
Installation and Controversy
Prince Afolabi Laoye Orumogege lll was installed as the 21 Soun of Ogbomosho on the 8th of September,2023, thus succeeding Oba Jimoh Oyewunmi who transited to the great beyond on the 12 of December, 2021[10]
However, his installation is fraught with controversy as some members of his ruling family had earlier instituted a court case against his selection by the kingmakers citing the fact that he was not part of the selection process from the beginning and should not be crowned against their wish. This led to the state high court issuing an order a day to his installation as king restraining the governor and other state officials from presenting Olaoye with any instrument of office or issue any certificate to him until the final determination of the mandatory injunction already filed before the court. But the kingmakers went ahead on the morning of Friday September 8, stating that they were yet to receive any court order,performed the necessary rites, and proclaimed him His Imperial Majesty, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, Orumogege III [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21]
Personal life
Afolabi Laoye is married to Omo Laoye and they are blessed with two children[22][23]
