Prof. Pravat Kumar Mandal is an Indian neuroscientist. Presently, he is the Professor, Scientists VII, and Director-in-Charge of National Brain Research Centre and Honorary Professor at the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, Melbourne, Australia. His major area of research involves studying neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, using multimodal brain imaging techniques.[1]

Early Life and Education

Prof. Mandal received his Secondary School Certificate from the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education in 1980, and Higher Secondary School Certificate from West Bengal Board of Higher Secondary Education in 1982. He pursued his Bachelor’s degree in Science and Master’s degree in Physical Chemistry from Burdwan University. Post that, he was admitted to IIT Madras for earning his Ph.D. in “Exchange interactions in some bimetallic systems: experimental and theoretical approach.”[2]

Career

After pursuing his Ph.D. in 1995, Prof. Mandal began his professional journey as a Project Officer at Regional Sophisticated Instrumentation Centre, IIT Madras, India. In October 1996, he joined as Post-doctoral Fellow at Prof. G.N. LaMar’s Lab, Dept. of Chemistry, University of California, Davis, United States. In then worked as a Research Associate at Dept. of Biochemistry, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Subsequently, in February 1999, he went on to become Research Scientist at Dept. of Structural Chemistry, Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria. In December 2000, he started as Research Instructor (Faculty) and Assistant Professor at University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine, Pennsylvania, USA. In July 2008, Prof. Mandal joined National Brain Research Centre as Scientist V and Additional Professor. Today, he has been working as Director-in-Charge, Scientists VII, Senior Professor, and Officiating Registrar of NBRC. Meanwhile, he had joined as Adjunct Associate Professor at Dept. of Radiology, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Maryland, USA for February 2011–May 2016. In August 2016, he was invited to be the Honorary Professor at Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, Melbourne, Australia, and has been working as one since then.[3]
