Pradeep Rai Mehendiratta (15 November 1931 – 28 January 2022) was an Indian academic administrator. He served as Director General and later Vice President of the American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS), where he worked for more than four decades facilitating Indo–American academic exchange and supporting research on Indian languages, art, and culture.[1][2][3]
Early life and education
Mehendiratta was born in Lodhran, Multan (then Punjab, British India; now in Pakistan) on 15 November 1931.[1] Following the Partition of India, his family migrated to India and settled in Haryana. He studied at the University of Delhi, earning an MBA, and later received a PhD in public administration from Kurukshetra University. His doctoral thesis was published as University Administration in India and the USA(1984).[4]
Career
Mehendiratta joined AIIS in the early 1960s and was associated with the institute for several decades. Under his leadership AIIS expanded its academic exchange programs and language training for American scholars in India.[2] He was involved in the development of AIIS research centres, including the Center for Art & Archaeology and the Archives and Research Center for Ethnomusicology.[5]
His role at AIIS is also noted in U.S. Library of Congress publications and in acknowledgements by scholars who used AIIS resources.[6][7]
Other events
In 1986, Mehendiratta was among the passengers injured during the Pan Am Flight 73 hijacking in Karachi. A U.S. Department of Justice transcript records that he broke his leg while exiting the aircraft.[8]
Death
He died on 28 January 2022 in Gurugram, Haryana.[1][2]
