Pozhamangalath George, better known by the political world in Kerala by the name PP Varuthukutty, was a labour union leader and political activist from the state of Kerala. Varuthukutty is most noted for heading the Tata Employees Union and as leading member of the Kerala Socialist Party. The party went on to form one of the worlds first democratically elected communist government.[1][2]

Early life

Much is not known about the early years of PP Varuthukutty. Later, he went onto become a plant manager at the Tata Oil Mills Company, India's first indigenous soap company. [3] Here, he organised the Tata Employees Union and became one of the founding members of Kerala Socialist Party.

Political life

As one of the leading members of the Kerala Socialist Party, PP Varuthukutty was instrumental in its establishment, often offering his house as a meeting place for the newly formed and bootstrapped party. An active member of the party who relentlessly worked for the party, he skirted arrests many times during the times when communist leaders were being hunted down.

Personal life

Married Pouly, who bore his 12 children; 7 daughters and 5 sons. This apparently large number of children was normal in the region during the period. In addition, the couple went on to adopt another boy who had run away from home and found shelter at their home at Vaduthala in Kochi.

Death

PP Varuthukutty died on 21 Feb 1979 of heart disease at Caritas Hospital, Kottayam after being shifted from Lourdes Hospital, Kochi following a complication of the kidney which required dialysis.
