Postindustrial is an American journalism-driven multimedia and lifestyle outlet that focuses on reimagining communities of the Rust Belt and Appalachia, based in Pittsburgh, Pa. The company publishes a quarterly magazine, a daily newsletter, produces multiple podcasts and short documentaries, as well as hosts events.[1] Magazine cover of the Winter 2020 issue. American conflict journalist and author Carmen Gentile is one of the company’s founders.[2]

The company’s use of “Postindustrial” is a stylized version of the two words, referring to regions that previously relied on manufacturing, mining, and agriculture as a base on which those communities and regions were built. The company carries news stories from a 13-state region of the United States.[3]

History

Postindustrial was founded in 2018 in Pittsburgh, Pa. Gentile, upon returning to his hometown area, wanted to start an independent media outlet that went beyond stereotypes of people in the region - in the aftermath of polls[4] that underestimated Donald Trump’s popularity in 2016.[5]

Content

Postindustrial produces original journalism, collaborates with other media outlets, and also curates stories from other news organizations.[6] Its coverage area primarily encompasses the following states, a region referred to as "Postindustrial America": New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Maryland, Indiana, Illinois, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, North Carolina, and West Virginia.

However the outlet also occasionally covers postindustrial stories outside "Postindustrial America."[7]

Audio Network

Postindustrial’s audio network features the work of independent podcast creators.[8] The company also produces original podcasts, including The Postindustrial Podcast hosted by Gentile.

Past guests on the Postindustrial Podcast include renowned author Timothy Snyder and Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman.
