PSU, sometimes known simply as Portland State University, is a public research institution located in Portland, Oregon. It first opened its doors in 1946 with the purpose of providing veterans of World War II with post-secondary education. Over the next two decades, it developed into a college offering all four years of education, and in 1969, it was given university status. It is unique among the public universities in the state of Oregon since it is situated inside a major metropolitan area. A board of trustees serves as the organization's governing body. The category "R2: Doctoral Universities - High Research Activity" includes Portland State University.

There are seven different schools that make up Portland State University, and between them, they provide education leading to degrees at the undergraduate and graduate levels in a total of 233 different subject areas. Schools that can be found on the Portland State University campus include the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the College of Arts, the School of Social Work, the College of Business Administration, the College of Education, the School of Social Work, the College of Urban and Public Affairs, and the College of Social Work. The sports programmes of Portland State University are referred to as the Vikings, and the school colours are green and white. The majority of these competitions take place in the Big Sky Conference at the NCAA Division I level.
