Ponni M. Concessao aka Ponnamma Mukundan is an Indian architect and urban planner based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.[1]

Early life and education

Ponni M. Concessao was born in Chennai to a Keralite family. She attended the Christ Church Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School in Chennai[2]. She was the first woman undergraduate student to get enrolled in Bachelors in Architecture from the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli in June 1987, at the time when there was a strong bias against women entering the field. She got her Master's Degree from Cornell University in 1989 and later received her advanced professional studies specialization at Harvard University in 1992 and was conferred with Honorary Doctorates from the University of Malaya and University of Milan in 2014 for Modern Architecture.

Early works

Ponni started her career with Edward Larrabee Barnes Architect , New York City, and also worked in the Yonkers Planning Department projects, New York and National Trust for Historic Preservation, Washington D.C. between 1992 to 1996.

She moved back to India in 1996 and along with her husband founded Oscar & Ponni Architects in Chennai. Her work has covered many types of town planning, buildings[3] and interiors in all parts of India. Her contributions include creating award winning designs,[4], authoring[5] publishing technical papers, and working on architectural education, conservation, women's rights[6], Art[7] and nation building.
