Philippe-Adrienne De Backer (born 4 October 1956) is a financial adviser and strategy consultant specializing in corporate strategy, investment and capital deployment, and business operating models. He is known for his work in organizational design and effectiveness, as well as mergers and acquisitions. His written work includes books such as "Reinvent Retail Banking," "Go East," and "Maximum Leadership."[1][2][3][4]
Biography
Philippe De Backer was born in Brussels, Belgium. He received a BA from Colgate University (1976-1979) in Economics and Literature, graduating Magna Cum Laude and receiving a membership award into the Phi Beta Kappa society. He then received his MBA from the Tuck School at Dartmouth (1981-1983) where he studied Strategy & Finance.[5][6][7][8]
Career
As a business executive, De Backer has held various leadership roles throughout his career. He started as Assistant to General Manager and Head of Business Development at ADB, a Siemens Group company, where he was responsible for the U.S. market entry strategy in its advanced electronic division. Later, he became Worldwide Managing Partner at Carre, Orban & Partners, and then Senior Partner at Bain & Company, where he co-founded offices in Brussels and Amsterdam and developed the European Financial Service Practice. He also founded BankClearly, a digital bank, and served as CEO of LF Capital.[9][10][11]
Currently, De Backer serves as a Managing Partner and Global Practice Leader in Financial Services at Arthur D. Little, where he is a core member of the Strategy & Organization Practice. He has also been involved in the establishment of a New York-based investment firm and the IPO of a Special-Purpose Acquisition Company with BlackRock.[7][12][13][14]
Authorship & Research
De Backer has authored and co-authored books about corporate strategy and financial services. His latest book "Disruption," published by LID Publishing and co-authored with Ignacio Garcia Alves and Juan Gonzalez from Arthur D. Little, is about the evolving banking sector.[15][16][17][18]
"Disruption" addresses the shift in banking norms and the new challenges traditional banks face from emerging competitors. The book has interviews with key figures within the banking sector. It also analyses ongoing trends, such as the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, and points towards opportunities for banks to optimize their unique assets to remain competitive in the market.
