Philippa Loengard is an American attorney licensed in New York City and New Jersey. She is the Executive Director of the Kernochan Center for Law, Media and the Arts, as well as a lecturer-in-law at Columbia Law School. Loengard is also the Chair of the Copyright Division of the Intellectual Property Law section of the American Bar Association as well as being an Academic Advisory Board Member of the Copyright Alliance.[1]

Education and career

Loengard attended Kent Place School in Summit, New Jersey, and got her Bachelors of Arts (B.A.) from Cornell University. She received a Masters of Arts (Master of Arts) in Communication from Stanford University,[2] where she was the 1994 recipient of the Karl A. and Medira Bickel Fellowship, and her Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School, where she was an Articles Editor on the The Columbia Journal of Law & the Arts and a Harlan Fiske Stone scholar. She received her Master of Laws in Taxation from New York University School of Law where she was a member of the Tax Law Review.

Loengard began her professional career working as a Page at NBC in New York. She was then a member of the Directors Guild of America Assistant Director Training Plan before leaving to become an Associate Producer at A&E Networks. Loengard worked on many episodes of "Biography (TV program)" including profiles of Colonel Sanders, The Harlem Globetrotters and a two-part series on the Impressionists. Loengard was also Coordinating Producer on The History (American TV network) Channel's "The Great American History Quiz."

Following Columbia Law School, Loengard was an associate at Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel LLP. She joined the staff of Columbia Law School in 2006 when she was named Assistant Director of the Kernochan Center. She was named Deputy Director in 2016 and Executive Director in 2022. Loengard also continues to teach seminars in law and the visual arts at the Law School.[3]

During her time at the Kernochan Center, Loengard has spoken around the world on topics related to authors rights. She also co-authored (with Nicholas O'Donnell) an Amicus Brief for the Supreme Court of the United States|Supreme Court concerning the fair use of photographs in appropriation art.[4][5]

In addition to her duties at the Kernochan Center, Loengard serves as co-secretary-treasurer with Jane C. Ginsburg of the U.S. branch of ALAI (Association Littéraire et Artistique Internationale).[6]

Personal life

Loengard grew up in New Jersey. After graduating from Stanford University, Loengard moved to Los Angeles. Since 1997, she has lived in the New York metropolitan area. Loengard is married with two children.[7]
