Phil Tucker is a Brazilian-British fantasy novelist. He is best known as the runner-up in the 2016 Self-Published Fantasy Blog-Off, a competition organised by author Mark Lawrence in which The Path of Flames placed second among approximately 300 self-published entries.[1] He is the author of multiple self-published fantasy series, including Chronicles of the Black Gate, the LitRPG series Euphoria Online, and the progression fantasy series The Immortal Great Souls.[2]

Life and career

Tucker was born in Brazil and holds both Brazilian and British citizenship. He currently resides in Asheville, North Carolina.[3] He began publishing fiction in the early 2010s, with early works including the urban fantasy novels Throne (2011) and The Grind Show (2011).[2]

In May 2016, Tucker self-published The Path of Flames, the opening novel of the epic fantasy series Chronicles of the Black Gate. The book was selected as a finalist during the first phase of the 2016 Self-Published Fantasy Blog-Off, and went on to finish second overall in the final round — the runner-up position among ten finalists drawn from approximately 300 entries.[1][4] Grimdark Magazine published a review of The Path of Flames, describing it as "a fun, escapist read that harkens back to traditional epic fantasy, while still providing subversive elements that move the genre forward".[5] The novel was also reviewed by Fantasy-Faction and The BiblioSanctum as part of the SPFBO final round.[6][7] Tucker has said that the competition represented "the first time that he felt like part of a community, as writing until that time had been a very solitary business".[4]

Tucker completed the Chronicles of the Black Gate series across five novels, the last of which, The White Song, appeared in 2017. He went on to publish the LitRPG series Euphoria Online beginning in 2018, with the first book, Death March, receiving a nomination for Best Self-Published Novel at the 2018 Booknest Fantasy Awards, as reported by Locus.[8]

In 2021, Tucker launched the progression fantasy series The Immortal Great Souls with the novel Bastion. The series received coverage from the book review site Littafi, which reviewed both Bastion and its sequel The Rascor Plains.[9][10] Tucker has been interviewed about his work in Grimdark Magazine and SFFWorld.[3][11]
