Petro Mykhailovych Tsarenko (Петро́ Михайло́вич Царе́нко; 12 July 1956 – 21 January 2023) was a Ukrainian phycologist and a specialist in the field of taxonomy of green algae (mainly coccoid green algae, charophytes, diatoms).[1]

Tsarenko was a doctor of biological sciences (1996), professor (2006), corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (2018),[2] and a long-term head of the Department of Phycology, Lichenology and Bryology of the M.G. Kholodny Institute of Botany.

He studied boidiversity of the algal flora of Ukraine,[3] proposed a system of regional zoning of that flora,[4] and developed criteria for categorization of rare and threatened species of algae and their conservation. His knowledge allowed him to form a unique collection of strains of halophilic and freshwater green algae (IBASU-A).[5].

Petro Tsarenko is the author and co-author of many scientific publications, including monographs and teaching manuals. Among them, there are fundamental overviews of algae boidiversity of the British Isles,[6] Israel,[7] Mongolia[8] and Ukraine.[9]

Some species of diatom algae are named in his honor: Buryatia tsarenkoi, Fallacia tsarenkoi, and Nitzschia tsarenkoi.
