Peter Zaitsev (Пётр Серге́евич Зайцев, /ˈpʲɵtr sʲɪrˈɡʲejɪvʲɪtɕ ˈzajtsɨf/) is a Russian-born American computer scientist, entrepreneur, and open-source advocate. He is best known as the co-founder of Percona, an open-source database solutions company. A serial entrepreneur, Zaitsev has contributed significantly to the open-source ecosystem through various ventures and thought leadership in the database performance space.

Early Life and Education

Peter Zaitsev was born in Russia into a scientific family. His father was a professor of biochemistry at Moscow State University and later worked at Karolinska Hospital in Sweden. His mother, also a scientist, became a research assistant at Leicester University in the United Kingdom.

Zaitsev began programming as a child, initially learning to code on paper before having access to a computer. He enrolled in various programming-focused extracurricular activities and became self-taught in many areas of technology.[1]

He earned both his undergraduate and master’s degrees in Computer Science from Lomonosov Moscow State University, Russia’s oldest university.

Career

Zaitsev's entrepreneurial journey began in 1999 while he was still a university student. He co-founded Spylog, one of the early web analytics platforms. The company was later acquired by MasterHost in 2007.[2]

He joined MySQL AB shortly thereafter and led the High Performance Group, gaining deep expertise in database internals and performance optimization.[3][4] In 2006, he co-founded Percona, a company recognized globally for its contributions to open-source database performance and management.

Since its founding, Percona has grown to over 350 employees and achieved estimated annual revenue of $50 million, according to market analyses.[5] The company’s software has been downloaded over 10 million times and is used by organizations including PayPal, Cisco, Comcast, and Groupon.[6]

Zaitsev has also been involved in several other startups and ventures.[7][8][9][10]

Open-Source Philosophy and Advocacy

Zaitsev has expressed strong support for open-source software.[11]

In 2009, he co-founded the Open Database Alliance[12], a vendor-neutral nonprofit organization that aims to protect and expand the open-source database ecosystem.

Zaitsev's ventures are built on open-source technologies.[7][8][9][13]

Consulting and Advisory Work

Peter Zaitsev offers consulting services to technology entrepreneurs, especially those focused on B2B infrastructure and open-source products.[14] He provides both paid and equity-based advisory services and occasionally offers pro bono support to nonprofit open-source initiatives.[15]

Peter Zaitsev is co-author of High Performance MySQL: Optimization, Backups, and Replication The book is published by O’Reilly Media and is considered a definitive resource in the field of database optimization.[16] It has been positively reviewed by technical experts and is used in academia and industry.[17][18]

Zaitsev has spoken at major global conferences such as AWS re:Invent, FOSDEM, PGConf India, and WeAreDevelopers World Congress.[19][20][21]

In recognition of his industry contributions, Zaitsev received the MySQL Rockstar Award from Oracle’s MySQL team in 2022,[26] the Highload++ Award for high-performance computing in 2019, and was named to the Redgate 100, a list of the most influential voices in the database world in 2022.[27][28][29][30][31][32][33]

Peter Zaitsev currently resides in North Carolina with his wife and two children.[34]
