Peter Coyl is an American librarian. He served as President of the Freedom to Read Foundation from 2022-23[1]and is currently the Library Director & CEO of the Sacramento Public Library.[2]
Education
Coyl earned a Masters in Library and Information Science from Drexel University and a Bachelors in Public Administration and Public Policy from Oakland University.[3]
Early Life
Coyl grew up in the Arden-Arcade area of Sacramento and received his first library card from the Arcade Library.[4]
Career
Coyl began his library career in high school at the Rochester Hills Public Library shelving children's books and later driving their Bookmobile. He was a Librarian at an International School in Taiwan[4] and later worked at the Dallas Public Library before becoming Director of the Montclair Public Library. [5]
As President of the Freedom to Read Foundation, Coyl accepted the Innovator Award on behalf of the Foundation at the LA Times Festival of Books[6] and appeared on a panel with authors Angie Thomas and George Johnson.[7]
