Personal development is comprised of activities that help people develop their talents and potential, create human capital, increase their employability, improve their quality of life, and realise their hopes and objectives. Personal growth may occur at any point in a person's life and is not restricted to a certain period of a person's life. Developing others in positions such as teacher, guide, counsellor, manager, coach, or mentor may encompass both formal and informal acts. It is not limited to self-help. When personal development takes place in the context of institutions, it refers to the approaches, programmes, tools, strategies, and evaluation systems that are available to facilitate good adult growth at the individual level in organisations.

Personal growth may also encompass the enhancement of the abilities and personalities of others. Such duties as teacher or mentor may be fulfilled either via a personal competence (such as the supposed ability of some managers to develop the potential of their staff) or via a professional service (such as providing training, assessment, or coaching).

Personal development as an industry use a variety of business-relationship models to do business. The two most common methods are business-to-consumer and business-to-business transactions. Consumer-to-business and consumer-to-consumer transactions, on the other hand, are two new methods that have emerged. In 2019, the worldwide market for personal development was valued at 38.28 billion dollars.
