Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania
Penn Med is the nickname given to the medical school that is part of the Institution of Pennsylvania, which is a private research university located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Penn Med is also known as the Perelman School of Medicine. The Perelman School of Medicine is the oldest medical school in the United States, having been established in 1765. It is also one of the seven medical schools that are members of the Ivy League. Penn Medicine is typically one of the top beneficiaries of research funding given out by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and according to the most recent rankings published by U.S. News & World Report, it is now rated sixth for research among medical schools in the United States.
Dr. John Morgan, a graduate of the University of Edinburgh Medical School and the College of Philadelphia, the institution that would later become the University of Pennsylvania, was the man responsible for establishing the school of medicine. In 1765, after his education in Edinburgh and other locations in Europe, Dr. Morgan relocated his practise to Philadelphia. Together with another person who had graduated from the University of Edinburgh Medical School, Dr. William Shippen Jr., Morgan was successful in convincing the trustees of the institution to establish the first medical school in the Original Thirteen Colonies.
In honour of Raymond and Ruth Perelman, who made a donation of $225 million to the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 2011, the school was renamed the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Raymond Perelman and his son Ronald Perelman are both graduates of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. It was the single contribution that was the most significant in the history of the institution, and it is still the most significant donation that has ever been given for name rights to a medical school.
In modern times, the institution has become known as the Perelman School of Medicine at Penn, or simply Penn Med.
