Per Anders Frans Hjalmar Renström, born 24 Januari 1942 in Västergötland, Sweden, is a professor in sports medicine at the Karolinska Institute, most notably renowned for his work with the International Olympic Committee and as an author of non fictional literature..[1]

Career

Per Renström graduated with a Medical Degree from the University of Gothenburg and became a licensed physician in 1972. He practiced clinical medicine at the Sahlgrenska Hospital’s orthopedic clinic 1973–1988 and achieved a Doctoral Degree in orthopedics, 1982, focusing on lower leg amputated patients[1]. Per’s doctoral advisor was Ian Goldie.[2]

Renström moved to Vermont, USA where he was appointed Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine at University of Vermont, Burlington, Vermont, USA between 1988 and 1997[1]. Thereafter, he was appointed Professor in Sports Medicine at the Karolinska Institute in Solna, Sweden, in 1997–2006. In 2007 he became Professor Emeritus[2].

Renström’s primary research area is related to biomechanics and treatment of injuries to the ligaments of the knee and ankle, epidemiology of sports injuries and amputations. He has 206 publications and supervised a great number of students leading to doctoral dissertations[3]

Sports Injuries: their prevention and management

In 1977, Per Renström published together with Lars Peterson the non-fictional book “Sports Injuries: their prevention and management”, also known by its Swedish name "Skador inom idrotten." The second edition was published 1986 and the third edition 2001.[2]. It has been translated to 11 languages and was the world's most widely distributed book on the subject.[4]. In 2010 the authors were awarded the Duke of Edinburgh Prize of The Institute of Sports and Exercise Medicine for his book “Sports Injuries: their prevention and management”[2]

The book ”Sjukdomar Läkemedel och Idrott” was published 1985 (Tidens Förlag), written by Per Renström together with Bengt Eriksson, Tore Mellstrand and Nils Svedmyr. The book was later replaced by ”Idrott, Hälsa och Sjukdomar” in 2011 (Studentlitteratur) with additions by Charlotte Greppe, professor Lo Hafström and professor Mats Börjesson among others.[2]

Research

During his time at University of Vermont, USA, Renström developed a peephole technique that made it possible to measure stresses on the anterior cruciate ligaments during various rehabilitation measures.[4]
