Payara Services Ltd is a British software company founded in 2014 that develops open-source application servers for Jakarta EE (formerly Java EE) applications. Its primary products are Payara Server and Payara Micro, which are designed for enterprise environments.
History
In November 2013, Oracle Corporation announced that it would discontinue commercial support for GlassFish Server, the reference implementation of Java EE.[1] In response, Payara Services was founded in 2014 by Steve Millidge.[2] The company introduced Payara Server, which is based on the GlassFish Open Source Edition and is an open-source platform for enterprise Java applications.[3]
In 2017, Payara Services became a member of the Eclipse Foundation, contributing to the development of Jakarta EE.[4]
Products
- Payara Server: An open-source application server derived from GlassFish, used in enterprise environments that require regular updates and long-term support.[5]
- Payara Micro: A smaller version of Payara Server, used in cloud-native and microservices architectures. It integrates with Docker and Kubernetes for deployment in cloud environments.[6]
Community Involvement
Payara Services is involved in various open-source projects, including Jakarta EE and Eclipse MicroProfile, contributing to the development of enterprise Java standards and the broader Java community.[7] In May 2024, Payara launched a tech-focused media and community challenge to facilitate knowledge exchange within the Java community.[8]
Recognition
In 2021, Payara Services received the Queen's Award for Enterprise in the International Trade category, recognizing its growth in overseas earnings and contributions to the UK's economy.[9] In 2024, Payara was a finalist for the Investors in People Awards, acknowledged for its commitment to staff development and excellence in organizational management.[10]
