Paul Rivett is a Canadian businessman and the former president of Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited, a multinational insurance and investment management company based in Toronto, Ontario. After retiring from Fairfax in 2020, he became a key player in the acquisition of Torstar and now oversees Tevir Investments Inc., a family office with various business interests.

Early Life and Education

Rivett was born and raised in Pickering, Ontario to immigrant parents from the United Kingdom and Poland. He attended Dunbarton High School, graduating in 1986.[1] He received a Bachelor of Science in Economics[2] from the University of Toronto in 1990, followed by a Master's of Industrial Relations in 1992 and a Law degree in 1996, both from Queen's University.[3]

Career

Law

Rivett began his legal career at the firm Blake, Cassels & Graydon where he learned about the world of mergers and acquisitions, later moving on to work at multinational firm Shearman & Sterling.[4] [3]

Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited

In 2004, Rivett made the jump from law to join Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited, where he held a variety of roles, including Chief Legal Officer, Vice President, Operations and Chief Operating Officer, before becoming President in 2013.[5] During his time at Fairfax, he initiated the company's innovation lab and FairVentures group,[6] which invested in several startups. Rivett retired from Fairfax in 2020.[7][3]

Torstar

After his retirement, Rivett partnered with Jordan Bitove to acquire Torstar, publisher of the Toronto Star.[8][9][10][11] Rivett was approached by Bitove for consultation on the acquisition but expressed interest in being a partner rather than a consultant.[12][13] The deal to purchase Torstar came after a long battle with competing bidder Canadian Modern Media Holdings.[14][15] He drew on his past experience in revitalizing a Manitoban railway as a potential asset for the company's turnaround efforts,[16] and wrote several articles for the paper while working there.[17][18][19] Rivett left the company after a legal dispute with his co-owner Jordan Bitove - who took full ownership.[20][21][22]

Tevir Investments Inc.

Rivett currently oversees Tevir Investments Inc., a family office with investments in gaming & entertainment, media, and industrial companies.[23]
