Paul Pangaro is an American computer scientist, interaction designer, entrepreneur, researcher, performer, and professor. He is known for his work in cybernetics, conversation design, and interaction design[1]. Pangaro is currently a Visiting Scholar at the Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture and the School of Design at Carnegie Mellon University in the United States[2]. He also holds a courtesy appointment in the Carnegie Mellon School of Design in the Carnegie Mellon College of Fine Arts[3]. Paul is the President of the American Society for Cybernetics (ASC) since 2021[4]. Before, he was a Professor of Practice in the Human-Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University.
Background and Education
Pangaro obtained a Bachelor of Science in Humanities/Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)[5] and later earned a Ph.D. in Conversation Theory in the Cybernetics Department at Brunel University (UK)[6]. His supervisor was the cybernetician Gordon Pask.
Academic and Teaching Experience
Pangaro has taught at several universities, such as the Maryland Institute College of Art, Parsons School of Design, Stanford University, the School of Visual Arts, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)[7][8][9][10]. He was appointed Chair of the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) Interaction Design program at CCS and was a Professor of Practice in the Human-Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University in 2019[2].
Cybernetics, Conversation Design, and Interaction Design
Pangaro's work, lectures, and writing primarily focus on designing for conversation and seeing design as conversation[11]. He has been studying conversation and design for over 30 years and applies cybernetics to conversation design[12][13]. He founded General Cybernetics, which creates new tools for reading digital content based on the cybernetics of conversation[14]. He is a proponent of conversation theory, which emphasizes the role of conversation and interaction in shaping design and creative processes[15].
Awards, Recognition, and Projects
Pangaro is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He is widely published, presented at conferences, and is a sought-after expert on interaction design. He is involved in creating #NewMacyMeetings[16][17], a renewal of the original Macy Meetings from the 1940s and 50s that became the foundation of cybernetics[18]. With TJ McLeish, Pangaro created a full-scale replica of Pask's Colloquy of Mobiles[19], which was displayed at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 2020[20][21] and is now part of the permanent collection of the ZKM museum in Karlsruhe[12].
