Paul Lawler (born 1971) is a British composer and electronic musician, recognized for his contributions to television, film, and video game soundtracks. He has released music under his own name and various aliases, including Arcane, Max Van Richter, and Synth Bytch.

Early life and education

Paul Lawler was born in Manchester, England. He began his musical career playing the euphonium in brass bands and, at the age of 16, became the youngest euphonium player to join the Leyland DAF Band. Lawler studied tuba at Chetham's School of Music and won the Skene International Concerto Competition. He also performed professionally with The Hallé Orchestra and for BBC Radio broadcasts.

Career

Television and film composition

Lawler began composing for television in 1997, scoring the BBC documentary series Ancient Voices. Over the next two decades, he composed music for more than 40 documentaries and other media projects for international broadcasters.

His notable film credits include the feature film Confine (2013), for which he won Best Music at the Wild Rose Independent Film Festival. He also composed for Lichnyy nomer (2004) and the video game MIB: Alien Crisis (2012).

Music projects and collaborations

Lawler has released numerous albums blending ambient, electronic, and cinematic styles, particularly under the alias Arcane. Albums include Moon (2017), Omega (2020), and Polaris (2021).

His 2013 solo album Opus received critical acclaim, with The Rocktologist praising it as "a true masterpiece of progressive electronic music" and awarding it a 9.5 out of 10 rating.[1]

In collaboration with AE Paterra (of Zombi/Majeure), Lawler formed the project Contact, resulting in the album First Contact. The project was featured by Vice magazine, which highlighted their sci-fi influences and unique creative process.[2]

Lawler also curated a playlist of soundtrack influences for Decibel Magazine, discussing his inspirations and compositional style.[3]

Lawler operates a studio located in a Victorian vicarage in the Lancashire hills, equipped with a range of analog and modular synthesizers.
